Hello all,
I'm loading a PC with win98 for my Uncle, he needs to stick with it for old software purposes. I just did a fresh install of WIN98SE. I want to get on the internet with it through the PC's built in network port. I went into the device manager and looked at the network adapter, it is "installed and working properly". However when I click on Internet Explorer, it just brings up the MSN internet setup wizard that INSISTS I need to have a modem installed to get on the internet. How to get on the internet via a network connection in 98SE? When I try and run the internet connection wizard that also is only looking for a modem, it doesn't ask if I want to connect via a network connection like XP does. I haven't used 98 in many years.
Thanks

You need to run through the Internet Connection wizard to tell it where to look for the connection; in this case, the network card.

Go to Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections tab and click on the Setup button to start the wizard.

When you get to the window asking "How do you connect to the internet," select "I connect through a local area network (LAN)."

Hi, To use the internet with win98se you need an Internet Service Provider
(ISP) and, of course, a telephone line. Then you will need a way to connect to
the ISP over the telephone line. If you want a DialUp connection you will need a modem. If you want an ADSL connection, then you will need a router.
In both cases the hardware and software needs to be configured.

when I click on Internet Explorer, it just brings up the MSN internet setup wizard

Install Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com).

It's a much safer browser than Internet Explorer, and you won't have to deal with the Internet Connection Wizard to use it.

THanks for the feedback. I followed the first response and was able to setup a network/ethernet internet connection on the PC. I'll throw out this other problem while I'm here. How do I update this WIN98 PC to the latest and greatest availble? I Know MS stopped supporting it a few years ago but I would like to take the PC up to the best state possible, or up to the last update possible. I tried to use the Microsoft windows update website but it wouldn't work with this 98 machine.
