Windows 98 se machine(wifes) networked with my Win 2k pro. machine through a hub using a cable modem for internet access. Having trouble keeping the Win 98se machine connected to the internet. Ipconfig release/renew will re-establish the connection but only for a while. What settings should I look at(change), also is there any downloads that will tweak the settings for optimum performance? Thanks.

Hi Jmtjt
I had a similar problem. You may already have done this so ignore me if you have. I went through this procedure and all is well.
1st. scan for a virus. 2. Check for spyware, I used spybot s&d. + adaware. 3. Check your start-up. There may be something there also. 'Start- Run- msconfig-ok ' then uncheck all the items and re-boot. Note: copy a list of what was checked first as I have found they do not always come back on screen in the same order. Repeat the first part of stage 3 then check them one at a time- try your connection then you might see which, if any, is causing the problem.
If that fails the experts will put you right, but that's something to be getting on with.
Good luck

How is the connection for your NIC on your 2K machine set up as, as in your IP, etc.
Also, do you have the 98 machine setup as DHCP? Need more info please :)

SPC hanna, The Win 2 K machine is together with the Win 98 machine via a hub and cat 5 cables. Then connected to the cable modem. I pay for two IP address with my cable company(TWCNY-RoadRunner)There is only one NIC in each machine, and the modem is nearest the Win 2K machine. The connection had been working well for about two years. I followed the advice of andy007 and cleaned out everything. Did another IPCONFIG release/renew and it did help.(she's not complaining as much)I've been reading about tweaks that will increase speed and reliablity. What do you think of them?

W2K registry tweak will help. Different then Win 98 both can be found below.
Here is the one I use and it does help:
Here (http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php)
If you do away with the Hub and use a Router, will save you the extra fee for the second IP address, as a router will use one IP and sub it out. Your cable company only see's one.- this is legal.
Need to way the cost of the extra IP and a router....
