WMP on Vista cannot play file

Hi,
When I try to play music in the mp3 format or videos in the avi format I get the error:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

I have all the same codecs from my other computer which has XP SP2. I even downloaded new audio and video codecs but I still get this error.
