360 Hardware issue
After a massively traumatizing accident involving my console falling all the way from an upright position to a horizontal one, it is no longer capable of reading discs...
Various reboots and attempts at a noninvasive fix have merely caused it to swap between simply saying unreadable disc to the screen where it states to put the disc in a 360 to play it. Currently, the warranty is void, and I'd be more than a little bit reluctant to deal with Microsoft's "customer service" anyways to get it fixed. At present, I'm assuming the problem is localized in the disc drive, and am looking at simply replacing the thing myself. I would however like to have it confirmed that I'm headed in the right direction and/or hear any alternatives before I potentially waste time and money. |

Assume the warranty is void because you have already modded?
Take a look at disassembly instructions here with specs on the dvd drive: http://www.anandtech.com/systems/sho...px?i=2610&p=11

Its void because the previous owner apparently got curious and opened it. In case you're wondering in that light, yes it worked just fine when I first got it.
In any case, thanks for the link, but that doesn't quite answer my question. |

My point was, it's just a SATA DVD drive, with a proprietory power connector. Can't hurt to try to replace it.
Since it had already been opened, the probability that it's indestructibility had been compromised by improper reassembly would be pretty high and I would guess the DVD drive did get more of a shake than it was capable of withstanding, given the symptoms you describe (assuming no other adverse symptoms are present).

my dvd drives on the 360 have always been my problem and you can replace the drive but sometimes its not the drive but its the power connector or the sata connector that is bad which is what has happen to my friends 360. I had to replace 3 360's in a year and 2 the next for dvd drives (btw that was around 14 weeks of no 360) I just sold it and got a ps3 and I now have absolutely no problems at all and I even like there online service over Live.
