FPS fluxuating too much.

Well, i just got a new laptop. Its not the best for pc gaming im aware of but it should be plenty powerful to run what i wanna run. My specs are

Dell inspiron I720

4gigs ram

Duel core processor

Mobile intel(R) 965 express chipset family video card.

The problem is while playing pc games, sometimes i will get 20-30 fps. Other times it wont go anywhere above 5 fps. Is there any way to increase performance when it start to lag a ton?

I wouldnt be so worried about it if i never got above 5 fps but when i normally get 20-30 in the same excact areas under the same exact conditions it makes me start to wonder. Ty for any replies.

Hi,
this could be the result of thermal throttling.
When the CPU gets above a set temperature it goes to a lower speed.

Does it fluctuate rapidly during gameplay or are you saying that it differs during different playtimes?

I noticed with my new GeForce 8800 GT OC that certain newer games are not optimized, nor has Nvidia released optimized drivers to accomodate them (most notably Age of Conan).

So, if you're noticing rapid changes during gameplay on newer games, that could very well be the issue. These things get optimized over time, however.
