my computer will not scan disc or defrag

Every time I try to run my maintence wizard It wil not go through wirh the process. The scan disc always says something is running, but I can't seem to find anything ruinning, It will say had to start over 10 times.
does anyone know how I can find out what is running when I start my computer. I even shut down my virus program, I have reciently added an adware program and since I have done this, my computer has been acting up and not working the way it should. The adware program is to stop ad ware from invading my computer as it was really making my computer work improperly.
thank you for any help

Try booting into Safe Mode and then running Scandisk (do the same when you run Defrag). This seems to solve most of the "had to restart 10 times" problems.

As for the issues you are experiencing with the Adware program you're running, perhaps start a topic about this in the Applications forum, stating what the program is, what version it is, the operating system you're running, and describe the problem as thoroughly as you can (i.e., include any error messages you get, etc.).

You're welcome for the help

When your computer is first starting/restarting, keep tapping the F8 key until you get the Startup Menu. You should see Safe Mode listed in that menu (might be third item from top, not 100% certain). Use your cursor keys to scroll down until Safe Mode is highlighted, then press ENTER.
If I recall correctly, in WINME the Help and Support Center will automatically open when you boot into Safe Mode. Exit out of that, once it's finished loading, then go ahead and start Scandisk.
