Games between hardrives
I'm going to be replacing my hardrive soon... even though the current one works well. I'm just doing some tech work, and it's time for an upgrade. Now I had been planning on slaving my current hardrive with my new one as the master... it dawned on me last night, however, that my current HD is an IDE connector, while the new drive and motherboard is SATA.
With that in mind, the master/slave connection isn't going to go as I planned. I do, however, have a external HD and I was considering copying some of my gaming folders from my current HD to my new HD via the external HD. It's all legal, I've got all the CDs and such, but as these are primarily MMOs I don't want to have to redownload two years worth of patches, when the game is current on my computer now. I would suppose that the viability of this depends on each game. Specificially LotRO, if I copied the Turbine Folder and the LotRO folder from my documents... all up to date as of right now... and then pasted them into the new HD. Would that work? |

It will not work, you will to to reinstall, you cannot copy just the game folder since pieces of the game will be in the registry, windows folders and such. Since you have the cds, there should be no problems reinstalling - just a pain.

Would one of these MMO's happent to be WoW? If so I can offer some insight with that.
![]() Oherwise, Renegade600 hit it on the head. Some games will allow you to move the files between drivse, but nowadays it's extremely rare .

Thanks for the answers, guys. I guess every question can't turn out with the answer you want to hear.
In the case of Lord of the Rings Online, however, I can say that the official word from Turbine is that it can be done, it just requires certain files copied to the external drive, which will allow the game to be fully patched after a fresh install. So in that case, good luck me ![]() And, I'm afraid WoW is one MMO that isn't in my computer. But again thanks! |
