Yes.

But make sure their ISP doesn't have a size limit to e-mail attachments. Those things can be huge. And it can take forever to download if they have a dial-up account.

Hi honeyangel8

Most email providers limit the size of an email. Another way you may want to consider is using the file share option on some instant messengers.

Edit: I've got to learn to type faster. ;)

how can they tell if there is a size limit?

Typically the size is equal the the amount of storage your allocated. Most, but not all, ISP's provide 10MB of space for your website....they always neglect to inform you that part of that 10MB of space is also used for storage of email.

Maybe the policies have changed since I last used a dialup account though. It's been close to three years now that I've had DSL so this may vary. WIth the service we provide though it's combined.

All email providers have a Term of Use page.

Here's MSN's Hotmail. http://privacy.msn.com/tou/

I don't think so... the entire amount of space for the free account is 4MB. About the avg size of an mp3 file.

http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/

Edit: That page is down at the moment...

Click "Browse" to select a file. You can attach up to 3 files for a total of 3.0 encoded megabytes.

What is an 'encoded' megabyte?
Attachments sent with emails have to be translated into a format other email programs can read. This translation, called base64 encoding, adds about 33% to the original size of the attachment. Thus, a 1.5 megabyte attachment will turn into a 2 megabyte attachment after encoding.

Also, compressing the file (using WinZip or similar) won't really do much, as the MP3 format's already fairly packed. Pretty tough to shrink it much more than it already is.

Aren't there some freeware/shareware utilities that will split up the data? I would assume that the receiver would also need the same type of utility to re-assemble the information though.

I don't see the point, I really don't. A file will take the same time to download from email, from an ftp, from a web site, or useing p2p. What is to be gained by placing it in an email?

Me personally, I always thought it might be easier to send the song, rather than try to point the person in the direction where they can get it themselves.

A friend of mine is totally inept as far as installing the necessary P2P software, or even figuring out how to use it, so I've tried to send some music unsuccessfully.

Guess it's time she learns ;)

I've used this file splitter in the past, it requires that whoever you are sending the split files, to have the same program, in order to "unsplit the files, it has worked very well!! :)

For fun, I just mailed myself a 3.4MB MP3 song as an attachment (using Outlook Express 6). Didn't zip it up or split it up. It took about 2 minutes to send, and another 45-50 seconds to arrive in my other account. So I guess that's not too bad. Maybe you want to send the album over song by song?

you could always try streamload.com, sign up for a free account, upload songs & mail them to somebody with another account.

ICQ (www.icq.com/download/ ) has a great file transfer program built in. You can even set it to automatically receive from users in your contact list when you or they are not there. It's very easy to use.

It also has another feature I have never really used where you can use a shared folder and autorized users on your contact list can access it at any time and upload to or download from the folder.

edit: Oh, and btw OS = Operating System (ex: Windows XP, Windows ME, etc). You can find out which you have by going to Start->Settings->Control Panel->System. The OS you have will be displayed at the top.
