Are you trying to start this process from the Command Prompt having booted from a floppy?

Are you using a Windows 98 Startup Disk?

Some details would be good since we're not there to see your system.:D

You'll need to use a startup disk in order to have CDROM support in DOS. If you don't have one, you can d/load the file to create one from here (http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm) . Click on the link for Windows 98 SE OEM, and d/load it to hard drive (do NOT d/load it directly to floppy disk, as this does NOT create the startup disk). Once the file is d/loaded, put a formatted floppy disk in the drive and then double-click on the d/loaded file to create the startup disk.

Ensure that your BIOS is set to try booting from floppy drive before hard drive. Boot from the startup floppy disk, and choose to start WITH CDROM SUPPORT.

Once you are at the A: prompt, look at the lines above it....there should be one that refers to the drive letter that, for this session, will be assigned to your CD-ROM. It will say something like this:

Drive x: = Driver MSCD001 unit 0
(where the x will be replaced with the actual drive letter for your CDROM for this session).

You should now be able to run Windows setup from the install CD. Ensure that, since you are installing Windows over top of itself, you install it into the same directory as it was originally installed (normally is the Windows directory).
