Checking out a friends computer, and every time it is started up we get the message:

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.

The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.

If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

I do not know what application it is talking about.
Everything works fine as far as I can see. So is there anyway to make that message stop coming up?

Thanx'

According to this Knowledge Base article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q194/8/45.asp&NoWebContent=1), it's due to a bad Banyan VINES uninstall. Directions at the link, or I guess you could simply rem out the line in sys.ini.

I followed what the instructions said but I coud not find the line in sys.ini. Even after searching for "vvinesd.386", and then searching for it line by line.
And there are no network components by the names it gave.

Anyother way?

Thanx'

Then it must be in the Registry:

Go to Start/run, type Regedit.

Drill down to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD

Click on the plus sign preceding 'VXD'
A long list of VXD's unfolds.

Locate vvinesd.386.

If it's there , highlight it, and press the DELETE key.

Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.

Good luck,
