Problem preparing new HD
What did I do wrong preparing a new 40gb HD to run W2K?
1. Booted from a Win98se boot disk 2. fdisk. Logical/active/fat32 (will convert to ntfs later) 3. format C: 4. Changed to E: drive (cd drive w/w2k disk in) 5. Ran winnt.exe 6. Took forever, OS finally finished. Then I got an error "Physical Memory Dump" 7. Decided to do it over. Then got error "1952 Bad Sectors" 8. Started over, but at format I entered "format c: /s". Running scandisk now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

I would make the Win2k install disk set. It will require 4 blank, formatted floppy disks. The needed files are in the \bootdisk directory on the Win2k cd. Create the floppies by running makeboot.exe form the same directory.
The setup will go much faster, and you can partition and format your drive during the install. |

Is the drive being seen properly and using LBA in the BIOS?

Yes, it does see the HD. Not sure what you mean by LBA.

Logical Block Addressing. LBA is the method of drive translation that is used to allow drives like we have today in the range of 40 to 200GB in size.
Within the BIOS you should see how the drive is being seen. The following screen shot shows the "Standard BIOS Features". The area I have encircled is the area you need to look at. If it says anything but Auto or Normal, then it may be that the drive is not being detected properly. Also, within the same location, what is the size of the drive being seen?

I'm curious as to why your formatting the drive using a Windows 98 boot disk and not booting from the CD itself and allowing Windows 2000 to perform the format.
