I'm trying to run a program. It says it is missing the shortcut. I've tried removing the program and it says it is not found. I've tried reinstalling it, but it says it already exists. How do I fix this? It is a photo program with my digital pictures on it. Will I lose the pictures I have aleady saved?

Hi tabrae99 - welcome to CTH. Have you had a look on your drive to see if the program and image files are there? What file format did you save your images as and what program are we talking about?

I checked the drive and I still have the pictures. They are .jpg. However, I no longer have the Kodak EasyShare listed as a program.

Just to ease your mind, the .jpg files are files that you won't lose if they now exist. They are standard image files that can be used by any graphics software.

I took a look at the Kodak website and see that the files are in a default directory in My Documents\My Pictures\Kodak Pictures. The FAQ recommends moving them to the desktop if you uninstall/reinstall. (You can put them on the desktop or just copy the images to a new folder in My Documents until you get things sorted out.)

More info at Kodak (http://kodak.broaddaylight.com/kodaksoftware/dml_fetch.pl?CompanyID=762&ContentID=6798&FaqID=6074&word=default%20directory&faq_template=http://kodak.broaddaylight.com/kodaksoftware/searchfaq.shtm&topic=9&back_refr=http://kodak.broaddaylight.com/kodaksoftware/&topicname=EasyShare%20software%20V3.x%20for%20Wind ows%20OS&Id=&Instance=&Shared=).

Are you using Windows? If so, which version do you use?

When you removed the program did you uninstall thru the Control Panel?
Did you reboot before attempting a reinstall?
Where do you start the program and at what point does it say there is a missing shortcut?

I'm using Windows 98. I start the program from desktop or from my camera dock. I've also tried from the program menu. As soon as I turn on the computer it comes up that it is searching for the missing shortcut for the program. It says the same thing when I click on the icon on the desktop. I haven't unistalled it because it is not listed under the Add/Remove program selection under the control panel.

I moved my pictures to a new folder. Then I deleted the program from the program menu. I then went under find files and folders and deleted everything that was under Kodak. I emptied the recycle bin and restarted the computer. This time it did not say it was searching for the missing link; however when I tried to reinstall it, it says: Error. The specified service already exists. I click ok, then it says: Setup, This program has performed an illegal function. I click on close. It goes back to by desktop, but I am missing my toolbar at the botton of the screen with the clock and start button. After I restart my computer they reappear.

Ouch! I'm over my head trying to fix this problem. You may have deleted some shared files. Maybe someone will come along with something that may be more helpful.

As a general guideline, uninstalling software by deleting things is not a good idea. Deleting files won't fix the registry entries and you might not find all the files as sometimes system files are modified, not just the files in the "Kodak" folders.

In the meantime, there's more info at Kodak (http://kodak.broaddaylight.com/kodaksoftware/dml_fetch.pl?CompanyID=762&ContentID=1865&FaqID=1087&word=add/remove%20list&faq_template=http://kodak.broaddaylight.com/kodaksoftware/searchfaq.shtm&topic=6&back_refr=http://kodak.broaddaylight.com/kodaksoftware/&topicname=EasyShare%20software%20V2.x%20for%20Wind ows%20OS&Id=&Instance=&Shared=) that might help you reinstall the software.

Hi tabrae99 - I cannot guarantee this will help because I do not know what you have deleted however its worth a try before we talk about other options.

Lets give your registry and drive a good clean and then see if you can reinstall your software. I can highly recommend jv16 with Installer (http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/jv16powertools.shtml). If you decide to try it, instructions for use below:

Install then restart your computer. Shut down everything in systray that will close and make sure that your browser is closed and you are off the net.

When you open the program, click on Registry Tool. It will give you a complete listing of the programs on your computer. Search that list VERY carefully and make sure that you put a checkmark in front of the ones that you KNOW that you dont have anymore (previously uninstalled) then click "Remove". On the same screen, click "Tools" then "Registry Cleaner". Make sure that there is a checkmark in "I want to manually verify deleted entries". and "Dont pop up the registry cleaner when finished". Make sure that the other options in this section are NOT checked. Where it says "Update The Screen While Scanning", choose the option that best suits you. Click "Continue", and make sure that all the options in the next screen are checked and then click "Start" again and let it find everything that its going to. Click "Select", then “Special Select” and click "All items that are safe to remove"" and then "Remove". You will get a message saying that you have selected all items, are you sure? (or words to that effect), the answer is Yes and when all entries are removed, click on Close and then Close again to return to other options.

While you are there, lets clean up your drive. Click on "File Tools". Go to Preferences and make sure that "Create a backup" is selected. Now choose your Source (drive) and select "Find Only Broken Shortcuts". Click on Start and let it find them all, then click on "Select" > "All" and then "Remove" (at the bottom). When the files have been removed, click on Close. Now, repeat the process for "Find only Temp Files" (but please dont use the other selections unless you really know what you are doing).

Reboot afterwards and try reinstalling your software.

HI
I installed the jv16 with Installer and did all the steps you mentioned. After I rebooted and tried to reinstall the software, I got the same error.

Under the heading of "won't hurt, might help", another thing to try is running the System File Checker:
