Often, when trying to send a file to another Messenger user (Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger) the file transfer fails and I get the " check with your system adminstrator" message.
I have Norton Internet Security set to allow all traffic generated from within Messenger and it doesn't happen all the time. Seems to happen with large files mostly it seems. I'm not using a router so that isn't a factor.
Anyone been through this problem and find a fix?
I'm using a 2.5 week old computer running WinXP using Windows Messenger.
Thanks all, for any assistance with this mystery.

Hi jayro - I had a look in MSN Messenger Newsgroups (http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx?NewsGroup=microsoft.public.msn.messen ger&SLCID=US&ICP=GSS3&sd=GN&id=fh;en-us;newsgroups) and found this reply by Jonathan Kay [MVP] to a similar question by a user running WinXP sp1
.
Firstly, which "firewall" did you turn off? Verify that the Internet Connection Firewall is
off -- click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network
and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click the network connection,
then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that the Internet Connection
Firewall is unchecked.
Are you using a router? If so, it will need to support Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) or have
some type of built-in Messenger support (which it doesn't if it's not working). Depending on
what router you have, there may be a UPnP firmware update available -- check the router
manufacturer's website. If it does support UPnP, you'll also need to use MSN Messenger 5:
(http://messenger.msn.com) as it supports UPnP file transfer.
As well, ISP may be NATing your connection (sharing). To check, click Start, All Programs,
Accessories, Communications, and then Network Connections. Double-click your internet
connection, and choose the support tab. Make a note of your IP address. Then go to
http://www.whatismyip.com, and see if the two IPs match -- if they do, you have a public IP
(which means everything in Messenger should work, assuming it's not blocked by a firewall).
If they don't match (and your IP begins with 192, 172, 10, etc.), then your connection is
probably NATd -- either by your ISP or a router (see first paragraph). In which case, you
won't be able to send files.
Hope this helps. Messenger 6 will be released soon and I understand from the reading reports from the beta testers that the upgrade fixes the problem.

Hey A-M:
Yeah, I've looked into all those things and ICF and ICS in XP is definitely not activated. I disable Norton Personal Firewall and still had the same problem sending the file. Also, I've created a custom rule "permitting" all Windows Messenger traffic.
As for a router causing this problem.....not using a router.
Also, I have a public IP that matches the results of whatismyip.com's information so NAT doesn't seem to be an issue with my ISP.
Another technological mystery, perhaps?
I just don't seem to be able to fix this yet.
thanks,
