While installing Roxio GoBack my computer locked up and needed
reboot and now I am having difficulty installing any operating
system on my hard drive. The drive is an 18 G. SCSI – (Maxtor)
Quantum Atlas (10,000rmp). I’ve checked it both with Maxtor’s
disk utility and IBM drive fitness test and the results are
that the disk is OK. I’ve formatted it with the Adaptec SCSI
controller’s low-level format utility, and then with both
Windows 2000 Pro Setup and again with 98se setup. Win2000 gets
up to booting during setup and display’s the error message:
NTSKRNL missing or corrupted – reinstall. And 98se returns the
error MSG: Error writing to drive C: I know that Ontrack offers
a disk utility program for $59 that is recommended by Seagate as
an install and repair program but if there were a simpler easier
way you know of I’d prefer that. Additionally I’ve used the
Tech-worm dos wipe utility to try to get all code removed before
setting partitions and formatting. Do you know of a simple
utility that will remove all code from any hard disk via a
bootable floppy? Can you help me?

I think you mean:

NTOSKRNL

Lets back up.

If you formatted the drive with Windows 2K, and used NTFS as the drive format, then tryed to installed Windows 98 you would get that error as Windows 98 will only install on a FAT partitioned drive.

Using a Windows 98 boot disk boot the computer and get to the A:\> prompt now type the following:

fdisk (hit <enter>
Now select view partitions.

Does it say NTFS or FAT16 or FAT32, we need to know this before going further.

Win 2000 (as well as XP) has the option to format in fat 32. I don't need the security of NTFS so I use the faster moving fat 32. And you are right I misspelled...
