There are a couple of options available for sharing an internet connection. Depending on your connection you could go with either a router or a proxy server.
Is your connection USB or Ethernet?
The systems you use for your kids can be almost anything, as long as they have a network card installed. Other than the internet, what will they be used for?

Daffy, I am just a novice, but I have the setup you are looking for and it works great.
I use a Linksys wireless router - my unit also has 4 hard-wired ports. So I can use it for all the computers in my home. In my case I connect using a cable modem which is plugged in to its own port on the back of the router. Then, each computer (I have a total of 3 PCs) is connected (using cat5 cabling) to the other ports. I also have 2 laptops with wireless cards and can roam freely throughout the house - always connected to the web.
Right now I just have the cabling running through the walls and directly plugging into the equipment. But I am in the process of changing that - I purchased some wall recepticles so that each room is permanently connected on the back end - then I can just plug into the wall no matter what room I am in. That is a work in progress.
You can manage the router's function through a webpage as the administrator. You can specificy IP addresses to each computer to control access or you can let the computers detect the IP Address. You can also control exactly how many IP addresses are available to prevent unauthorized use (by neighbors with their own PC cards that happen to be in range).
A friend of ours has a laptop with a PC card and we have assigned an IP address for him as well. When he visits, he can bring his laptop and connect to the web using his own computer. Also, sometimes he stops by for a visit and we are not home yet, but he can sit in our driveway or on our deck and use the web while he waits for us to get home.
I hope this is somewhat helpful. Jill
