Only browsers work, no other applications can access net

Hi all, newcomer here, desperately needs help.

Problem: After uninstalling the latest beta of Zonealarm, the only applications that can access the net are my browsers. All other net applications, like OE, ICQ, FTP, telnet all do not work. Have tried uninstalling and installing ZA again, no go. Have since then reinstalled Win98 twice on top of my old installation, and used SFC to repair system files, the problem still persists.

System specs: K6-2 450, 128mb ram, Realtek etherent card, I'm on T1.

Any help would be appreciated, the problem has been buggingme for the past 3 weeks, it's driving me nuts!

Hi MT...this is a difficult one to figure out.

With ZA installed, was ICQ etc. allowed to access the net under the Programs section?

Yups, Zonealarm allowed access to the net for ICQ and the rest of the programs I mentioned. I checked that by unchecking the option to hide the permission dialog that pops up when a program tries to access the net. After I gave any of the programs permission, they still end up timing out, while the browsers work perfectly fine.

Don't have ZA installed on my com now though.

Hi,

This definately sounds like a bodged uninstallation.

Check to make sure that ZA isn't being loaded in either your startup group in the Start Menu, and in the Run keys in the registry.

I had this problem once but I can't remember how I fixed it

Also reset your security permissions in your browser (for IE click Tools/InternetOptions/Security tab)

MisHy, I did make sure that all registry references to ZA went deleted, and twice reinstalled win98 since then, but still the problem persists. The internet settings in IE are the default ones, and they shouldn't affect other net applications anyways. It is indeed a very wierd problem, I'm quite resigned to formating and doing a clean install. Thanks for trying to help though.

Hi,

Have you read this topic http://www.cybertechhelp.com/cgi-bin...c&f=9&t=000130

Go to the link which is on the 1st post.

They mention the files that are installed with ZA that aren't properly removed when uninstalled.

It may be of some interest to you.

As far as the browser settings - sorry my bad - I misread ya question

MT,

Did you manually delete the registry entries just out of interest ?

Or use a regcleaning program ?

I use Regcleaner which is a free program which I've always found to be excellent. This is the link if you're interested http://www.jv16.org/

btw a program like Cleansweep can be a lifesaver in these situations as you can configure it monitor the installation of such a program and then uninstall if fully

MishY, thanks for all the links. Sad to say, i've tried all of them weeks ago when my problem occurred. 1st thing I did was to go the ZA support page that you linked and physically removed all the dlls and registry keys that the uninstall left. Din work for me, but I think it's might be useful to others who encounter probs with ZA.

Yups, I've got Regcleaner, and I gotta agree that it's one cool prog, small and useful, better than any of its shareware cousins out there IMO ...

Cleansweep eh?? I never did like the idea of such monitoring programs, cos they tend to consume system resources by running in the background all the time. Kinda slows down my com, but now I guess I've learnt my lesson.

Hmm, thinking of switching to win2000 after my format, what you think?

Hey,

I'm running Win2kPro and loving it I don't think I'll ever return to the 9.x versions simply because I love the stability of Win2k.

Have you tried Tinys firewall ? if you're looking for a replacement as I've heard that is supposed to be quite good.

I can't say I worry about firewalls being stuck on this 56k connection, and win2k is a pretty secure OS if you're just surfing around with IE6 I've found.

Ah, you have a T1 connection...Sheesh ya lucky

Been hearing lots abt the stability of win2000. Wondering though whether to just stick to win98 until windowsXP is officially released.

Yups, a T1, though with the school proxy in place, at times it can seem slower than a cable modem...
