Hi,
What videocard do you have ?
Sounds from the little info you gave that you need to install your video drivers which you will be able to download from the videocard manufacturers website.
Some system specs - RAM, CPU speed & make, etc. would be handy for us to know when answering your questions please :)

Additional info from Beowulfy from a double post
I have a pentium 133 48meg ram, with a trident? super vga video card and I cannot get anything more than 256 colors. I also seem to have an inactive DMA controller. Windows tells me to reinstall the driver and i do so and when it reboots it still shows up as a problem device. I am not a computer whiz so please, any help would be
appreciated!
:)

beowulf,
I reposted what you wrote in your other topic here because you did answer all you could. Which means as far as I'm concerned that it is then our job to help you either learn what is needed for us to help you, or we'll help you shortcut a way to finding the info we need to resolve your problem. So stay right here ;)
If I were you this is what I would do...
2 ways. 1 easy 2nd one easy too :)
Firstly, when you turn on your computer the first thing you should see is information about your videocard. You will see this almost instantaneously as you turn on your computer. You'll have to read it quick because it doesn't stay there long. However what you see there will be your videocard info. Try and write down all you see and then post it here.
Or...
Download this free program called SiSoft Sandra. http://www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/
Then install it and run the program. Choose "System Summary" and then scroll down to where it says "Video System", and look for adaptor which should then tell you which video card you have so you can then reply here and let us know.

Hi beowulfy,
Do you have a driver cd or floppy disk containing the drivers for your videocard ?
If you don't...
Take a look at this link >>Click Here<< (http://www.anime.net/~gigagon/trident/trident.htm)
Read the paragraph "Windows 95 has a problem in setting your Trident PCI by itself"
Now I know that you are dealing with win98 but this works on the same principal.
Download the program from the top of that page I gave you the link to called "chipnumb.exe" and save it to your C:\ directory.
We need to find out the correct model number for your videocard because from the info you have given us we can't tell, which is why I had suggested downloading Sandra because sometimes that can get a bit more info.
Once you have the program downloaded you will then need to reboot your computer into DOS mode so you can run the program.
To do this restart windows as normal but once your computer resets you will see a message saying "Starting Windows98" just before the Windows 98 coloured splash screen comes up. When you see the "Starting Windows98" message press F8. You should then see the Windows98 Startup Menu.
Pick "Command Prompt Only"
You should then be taken to a C:\
From there type in the name of the program you have just downloaded - chipnumb.exe
This will then tell you the model# of your videocard.
Once you have the model number for your videocard you can then go back to that site and download the drivers for it.
If you need help with installing them then just ask :)

beowulfy,
Your videocard will display in more than 256 colours if you use the correct driver for it.
Following the above steps would do that for you.
;)
Well, I hope we've helped more than we've confused you
