I keep getting an error message " Devldr 16 illegal operation and will be shut down. This happens several times a day whether the comp.is used or not. I have to reboot to clear it. Is there someway to correct this?

Hi jimco - from Paul Collin's list

devldr16 - associated with some Creative Labs sound cards. Provides audio support for DOS applications. Not needed if you don't have those. Required if you use "Sound Play Control" and "Sound Recorder". To disable: (1) Disable via MSCONFIG (2) Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager then disable "Creative SB16 Emulation" under Creative Miscellaneous Devices

I am using this program...should I try an uninstall and re-install?

I'm not sure exactly when this started. I did load the update for Windows Media Player several weeks ago. Could these have a conflict with each other?

Hard to know what caused the problem jimco. Devldr16 has a known history of causing problems. Check in Device Manager first and see if there are any conflicts. I guess, if you are using DOS games and cannot disable it, you could try reinstalling your sound card drivers.

Hi jimco - it might help if we have a look at what's running when you boot. Go here (http://www.spywareinfo.com/files/hijackthis.zip) and download and run a scan with Hijack This. Dont make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.

Yep, it's running again. Here is a fix that worked elsewhere (Rollin Rog's):

"I do recall someone solving a similar problem with the DOS emulation install, by removing the sound card and doing a CUSTOM install in which one can skip the option to install the Emulation component. If that's an option for you, it might work."

I'll check your log for unnecessary startups later on jimco. I gotta run but I will be back later.

AnnMarie

OK, to fine tune your startups, go to Start > Run and type:

msconfig

then OK. Click on the Startup tab. The below entries can be disabled without any problem if the explanation does not conflict with your requirements:

[LoadPowerProfile] Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

Loads your selected power scheme. May not be required - depends upon whether you modify the default Control Panel -> Power Options settings

[Disc Detector] C:\Program Files\Creative\ShareDLL\CtNotify.exe

For Creative sound cards. Detects when you insert a CD, DVD, etc

[AudioHQ] C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\AudioHQ\AHQTB.EXE

For Creative Soundblaster Live! series soundcards. System tray application for SB Live! functions. Available via Start -> Programs

[RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER

Download manager. Available via Start -> Programs

[LoadPowerProfile] Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

Already explained. There are always two startups.

[PPWebCap] C:\PROGRAM FILES\VISIONEER\PAPERPORT\PPWebCap.exe

"PaperPort" software associated with scanners

[Cacheman] C:\PROGRA~1\CACHEMAN\Cacheman.exe

Freeware disk cache tweaker from Outer Technologies. Should only be run once and not loaded at start-up

If you wish to disable the below entries, run Hijack This again and select and then click on "Fix Selected". All of the below can be disabled if you have no use for them.

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Resource hog that launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required anyway. Osa9.exe is the Office 2000 variant

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\wkcalrem.exe

Produces a pop-up reminder of events scheduled using the MS Works Calendar. Only required if you use this feature.

O4 - Startup: WinZip Quick Pick.lnk = C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE

Added with WinZip version 8.1. "The new WinZip Quick Pick taskbar tray icon gives you instant access to WinZip and your Zip files. Just left click the icon to open WinZip, or right click it to instantly reopen recently used Zip files, access your Favorite Zip Folders, open WinZip Help, or start WinZip itself.". You can right-click and close it - choosing to not re-load it at start-up

O4 - Startup: Event Reminder.lnk = C:\Program Files\Broderbund\PrintMaster\PMremind.exe

Print Master Gold - calander feature that pops up reminders, such as birthdays

O4 - Startup: Forget Me Not.lnk = C:\Program Files\Broderbund\AG Sunday\AGremind.exe

Calendar reminder part of American Greetings® CreataCard®

Reboot and let us know if you notice any improvement.
