I sent this e-mail to Polk audio as my speakers have that name on them, their reply is after my e-mail.My computer is HP.

Hello I think I need new speakers,
I am having trouble with my 3 year old Hp computer, It makes a pop pop pop
noise when I shut it down at night if I don\'t cut off the powr switch, I
moved the power source to another plug and it had alot of static when I
plugged it in just like it does at the plug its in now, I even have a new
strip. The only times it pops is on shutdown and wakes us up .

I can unplug the speakers at night and leave my computer on and not get the
popping noise.

My computer is an Hp Pavilian 6553 and the speakers hang on the side of
the moniter and have the polk name on the,. Can you give a total price on
the set and if thats not the trouble can I send them back for refund? Can I
also have an item number so I can view them on your site.
Thanks so much,

Their reply
These speakers are passive and are driven from a amplified soundcard. The
problem is within the soundcard.
You might want to contact H/P to obtain a new amplified soundcard. Their
toll free number is 888-774-6848.

What does passive means in this context?
Thanks!

Passive In Electronics: Exhibiting no gain or contributing no energy: a passive circuit element.

Most speakers have built in Amplifier’s. Apparantly your speakers get their amplification from the sound card.

Since the puter is 3 years old, I assume this problem just started? They worked before?

I'm not into HP puters so will not advise, but someone with more knowledge then me with HP should be along.

Do you know if you have built in sound on the motherboard? Or does it have a sound card? Sound Cards are not that expensive, unless you want 3D/2D, super duper stereo, booming bass sound....

Also not too much of a problem to install. If the motherboard has built in sound, you can disable and add a sound card. However, if it is built in, then maybe reinstalling the drivers may work.

If you go to the HP site you should be able to find the drivers.

The only driver I found was HERE (http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareList.jhtml?reg=&cc=us&prodId=hppavilion18928&lc=en&softitem=Microsoft%20Windows%2098&sw_lang=en&pagetype=software) - however, not sound just a multimedia keyboard driver.

So you must have a sound card installed?????????

OH gosh I have no idea if I have a motherboard or sound card, this is way over my head, I better just let a computer person check it out.

Thanks

There's some good information on this HP support page (http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?reg=&cc=us&lc=en&prodId=hppavilion18928&docName=bph07154&cat=solve) with instructions on how to determine what kind of sound card you have (integrated on the motherboard or separate card).

There is also a link there to information/instructions on how to install the drivers.

I assure you that your computer does have a motherboard. It's the main circuit board which everything that makes a computer a computer plugs into. ;)
