linux commands

I was wondering s there a list of complied commands for Redhat 8 available that can be printed for reference?

2) Is there a bug in the video setup on Redhat 8? Since I am reading Linux for Dummies (Redhat 8) I loaded that onto a drive , but reverted to Redhat 9 after seeing video problems

Thanks

What type of commands are you looking for? I'm assuming that you're talking about command line shell commands.....right? Like ls for list, cd for change directory, and pwd for print working directory?

Or are you looking for a list of all the programs that may be available in a typical RedHat install?

Not a readily available list right off the PC somewhere no. Although that doesn't mean someone doesn't have a long list out on the web.

The problem with this lies in the fact that there is technically and endless list of 'command' line programs that can exist. Now there are common ones like the ones that I mentioned earlier and there are items added by each program that you install.

To compile yourself a decent list so far, you can do the following:

1. Do a listing of the contents of the /bin directory. This will give you a listing of the core items that are common to most linux and unix OSes. Items like ls, cd, chmod, and grep will be in there.

2. Do a listing of the contents of the /usr/bin directory. This will give a listing of most of the executable programs that exist on your system.

3. With the outputs of these listings, you then have yourself a handy compilation of what you have in terms of 'commands'.

**note when I say commands here, this is for both commands and programs, because technically, commands like ls and cd are mini programs.

4. Lastly, you can go one step further and at a command prompt, type 'man commandname'. This will get you a manual on the command (if it has one that is), which will explain how to use it. Although, the man pages are more for commands than 'programs' like Mozilla and OpenOffice.
