administrator control

How can I get folder options viewable again to access windows folder and others if the option is hidden and regedit is disable?

Is there a way to get around application restrictions and view all control panel applets?

Can I create a new user that doesn't abide by the restrictions in place for the whole computer?

I don't think these administrator restrictions are done with a program. Is there a way-like MS-DOS of enforcing restrictions or an alternative way to edit administrator restrictions

Is there a tracking software or key logging software which I can install that have the extention .exe

In conclusion is there anyway to get around these restrictions, even just to edit them. Please don't mention poledit cause It isn't appropriate for this situation.

get back to me on your thoughts. there must be a way around

P.S I have a window 98 operating system.

First to enable regedit again download attachment enableRegedit.txt and rename it to enableRegedit.reg
Click twice to import it to the registry; click OK; click OK
Now you will be able to open regedit again.

To enable folder options again:
Go to start > run > type in regedit and find
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies
In the right pane there will be a string NoFolderOptions
rightclick NoFolderOptions > edit and change the value to zero
After a restart the folder options will be back.

Concerning your control panel icons.
Check your control.ini file.
It is located in \Windows
In the section [DON'T LOAD] there are your icons which are not displayed/loaded. Delete them and restart windows.

i'll give it a go.

Remember I said I couldn't access windows cause it was hidden. Well this means I will be unable to browse the windows folder for the control ini file. I did some tim back copy each individual control panel applet to disk, however reasonly after clicking on them within the floppy there have been problems opening them.
Could it be that they have been temporarily removed or been inactivated by a program or something? P.S I have misplaced the disk or is has been stolen.

Also if windows is hidden how can I enable view again? Is the only way the registry?

What about the MS-DOS, can these restrictions be implemented by such commands?

I have found a way of installing a program with exe extension. This is done within a zip file. However unless a shortcut is created I cannot activate the program exe due to the restrictions.

Also recently I have noticed that my brother has added two new shortcuts-enable and disable. Could this be a command or would a program present these. The icons are basic windows icons. One is a quotation mark.

thanks for input already, i'll get cracking with what I have and get back to you

reply and additional information

I think the registry key ''restrict run'' is the power behind this. Only those programs that are in this key work and all the rest of programs don't.

I tried that enable registry file but discovered that the reg file was also administrated restricted or reg has been disable.

is registry the only way to solve this program

I also have added to this problem by trying to install an administration program to take over-''access administration pro'' or something. It installed however I had no hope of opening like I said the restrict run is probabrly the cause. After discovering this I removed the folder however I could not remove the shortcut (right mouse click is disable on desktop and startmenu). This meant that he discovered it and now is using the program ontop of the exiting restrictions (we have ''roxio goback'' which records computer histroy and he is able to recovred deleted files-this is also password protected and he clears tracking history every time he changes administration features, thus preventing me from seeing what he does to make changes.

I am beginging to loose hope however could you let me know if any of these files are aiding in the restrictive nature of the computer as they appear when the computer restarts. P.S I am unable to access any of them due to restrictions

windows\sti-trace.log
windows\user.dat
windows\Wnbooting.sts
windows\system .ini
windows\system.dat
windows\win386.swp
.pol files

Peter, you are right RestrictRun is in order here.
This answers your last question about the files. Your brother used poledit to restrict acces.
You can try to get rid of it by copy and paste this:
begin copy--------------------------------------------------

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\RestrictRun]

end copy-----------------------------------------------------
If this computer is set up for more than one user rename the ".Default" key with your username.
save it as norestrictrun.reg (or whatever as long as it has the extension .reg)
This will hopefully enable you to run regedit and poledit again.
My best bet would be to use poledit to kill all policies.
BUT BE SURE TO READ THE HELPFILES!!

I will be out for the next few weeks, so I won't be able to post back.
Hopefully someone else will come along to help you out, if you need more help.

Good luck!

I have found the answer!!!

I found this wonderful site that explained the vulnerabilty of NT administration restrictions. In this it explains how to run programs that are restricted by the exe restrictions and how to gain entry to the registry. The vulnerabilty is the same for all operating systems (I think) of windows.

The main idea is to get access to the windows folder and copy the regedit.exe to your folder, then rename it to winword or other. once this happens you have complete control over the registry and the restrictions. You can also rename any other file such as an installation file and install such programs as winguides registry tweaks and remove the restrictions. if the restrictions keep coming back use poledit to remove them.

I did this yesterday-thurday, while my brother was out. he will have a shock when he gets on the computer today.

Rather than using poledit or an administration program I discovered that my brother had just hidden all windows files including control panel applets and then disabled folder options.

I will write back with the address as I forgotten it.

One problem solved another to fix

Hi. Sorry but I can't recall the name of the site still.

Another problem. My brother discovered my tracks and now is using a administrator program to restrict access rather than just registry (done previously). When I start windows I am prompted for a password. Does anyone know how I can bypass this program's login'? By the way F8 for bootmenu is disabled.

Talk more later

I am the champion!

After beating my brother at his own game he eventually gave up and now the computer is restriction-free.
