I tried to install Grand Theft Auto Vice City and it installed directx 9 without my knowing, I did not have updated video or sound card drivers so I started having graphics and ddhelp errors. I wasn't able to install the correct drivers and directx and get it working. So I reinstalled windows and that fixed some of the problem, I was able to pass all the Directx direct 3d tests wich i hadn't been able to do before but my games still wouldnt run. I mainly play Everquest and it would get to the character select screen then freeze the whole computer leaving me only able to power off or reset. Now I am trying different combinations of old drivers and directx versions but for some reason now when ever I try to test direct 3d it passes the directx 7 test but freezes the machine when it tries directx 8, this even happens now with the newest drivers and DX9a. Everquest currently requires DX8 and GTA requires DX9 so I would like to run DX9.
Any help or suggestions would be great, thanks.

I tried to reinstall DX9a and the latest drivers and when I try the dxdiag I get the following errors for direct 3d
Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure) Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code) Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code) These are the same errors I was getting before I decided to reinstall windows.

Hi Mordrax. Welcome to CTH.
What type of ram do you have? DDR? Also go into your power setting and make sure that you have everything selected to Always On. Disable any Hibernate or Stand by feature. Test. If that doesn't work.... Crazy as it may sound you may want to remove some RAM. Leave just one stick in and test. You can add more sticks if the test works for you. There are dozens and dozens of setting that you can fool with and never track down this problem. Please post back with your results.

Hope that helps. I would still try the low tech approach first.
