Unhappy after windows 98 screen you get a black screen that says

help- i uninstalled a program( second chance) and now when i restart my pooter i get....after the windows 98 screen... a black screen that says...cannot find a device file that mat be needed to run a windows or a windows application. the windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.if you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
C:\pqsc\program\sc.vxd
press a key to continue....

so i press the enter key.. and wait about a minute and a half... for my password prompt screen to come up.
i have tried reinstalling the second chance program... pooter still cannot find the missing file.
can someone help this dummy out???

So if you just want to get rid of the error message and not get the program to work:
Goto Start>Run
Type: msconfig
Select the Startup Tab
Unselect the item that has the programs name or points to C:\pqsc\program\sc.vxd

I am pretty sure the entry should be in there. If it is not then it is not.

Hi luannepalmer - It sounds as though a registry/system.ini entry was not removed when you uninstalled Second Chance.

We might be able to see where is starting from with Startup List and get rid of it. Go here and download and run Startup List. It will generate a log file. Copy the log and paste it back into this thread.

To get rid of that error message, you have to delete a key in the registry.
You can do it manually if other options fail.

Go to start > run > type in regedit and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD
next find sc.vxd. If it is there remove it.

I'm not sure if I understand you.
You uninstalled the program and it is still running??
If so don't do what I suggested!

Well, I would if it were me luanne. Then you know that it's an orphaned entry if you find one.

Maybe I was a bit hasty with my reply, I saw you were online.
You can try, but to be on the safe site make an export of this key.
To do so select sc.vxd (on the left pane) go to Register (topleft) and choose export.
This way you can always put it back.

luanne - it will be much easier to find where the call is coming from if you uninstall Second Chance again and reboot. Once we find where the problem is, we can fix it and you can then reinstall Second Chance. If there is anything that you are unsure of, ask first. It doesnt matter how many times you ask.

Great, you have found it.

Create a new Folder on your Desktop. Now run regedit again and select the below entry with your mouse. Then go to File > Export Registry File (or Export), call it Powerquest (or any name that you like, selected branch should be pre-selected) and then send it to the New Folder on your Desktop as a reg file. If you have no further problems after you delete the file, rightclick on the New Folder and delete it. Do NOT doubleclick on a .reg file unless you want to put it back in your Registry.

Now when you have done that, select the below entry again and go to Edit > Delete.

AB Static Vxd "C\pqsc\program\sc.vxd"

Close your registry editor and reboot your computer.
