View Full Version : Registry error and MSN

Everytime windows 98 gets loaded it gives me the "Windows encountered an error accessing the system registry. Windows will restart and repair the system registry for you." - However restarting doesn't fix anything and the error message keeps coming back up.

I have MSN on the computer. Version 4.6 I think. However when I go to remove it from the add/remove list it tells me that it is not installed on my computer - which it is because I use it regularly. If I keep MSN on my startup list it loads up and I can use it. (the system registry error still comes up though) If I take MSN off the startup list, and try to load it afterwards it gives me the message "The Managed Software Installer failed to install the program associated with this file. Please contact your system administrator"

I don't get it. I do have MSN on the computer, as I said I use it everyday. I figure there's a problem with MSN and the system registry which is why it keeps giving me errors all the time, but since I can't uninstall it from the add/remove list I'm not too sure how to fix this problem.

What I've been doing so far is just leaving the system registry error message up without clicking ok (just moving it around the screen) and using all the usual programs without trouble. It's up right now at the top of my screen and I'm just ignoring it.
But this is by no means a solution :)

Oh here's my start up list as well :

Hi Fireweed - it could be a problem with your RAM but we can try a manual restore of your registry if this has just started happening to see if it fixes the problem.

Win98 backs up 5 copies of your registry by default.

Reboot into DOS using:

Start > Shutdown > Reboot to MS-DOS mode

You will now be in DOS mode, and it should look like this: C:\Windows>

now type scanreg /restore

(note the space between "scanreg" and the forward slash)

At blue screen, use your mouse or keyboard arrows to choose a date which you know the registry was fine. The date you choose must say "Started" next to it. (try not to choose the oldest date, it probably will not restore).

Make sure the word "Restore" is highlighted, and press your keyboards Enter key. At the "You have restored........." prompt, press your keyboards Enter key.

Your computer will restart in MS-DOS mode again. At the MS-DOS prompt, type Exit and press your keyboards Enter key. You computer will then re-start in Windows.

Let us know if this helps with the startup problem and if so, then we can have a look at the others. They may not be related.

Thank you for the help AnnMarie :)

I did a registry restore to a previous date. There is no more "registry error" message showing up. I ran Spybot a day or two ago and erased some "faulty" registry keys so perhaps that had to do with the problem?

MSN still acts the same however. What's the best manual way to remove it and download a new copy? As I said it shows up in the add/remove list but when I try to remove it it says that it's not installed on the computer. Which is obviously is.
How is it possible that I can use MSN (if I put it into the start up list) but if I try to load it otherwise (or if it shuts down and I try to reload it ) it gives me the "The Managed Software Installer failed to install the program associated with this file. Please contact your system administrator" message. I suppose it's not a huge problem but I would like to have a normal running copy.

Okay duh I'm an idiot. I just erased MSN manually, and downloaded a new copy which is working perfectly.

Thanks again for the help with the registry though. Hopefully there won't be any more problems.
