Hello
I have just started using the internet on my computer. I connected fine but had problems with IE accessing web sites. It just came up page cannot be displayed most of the time. I installed adware 6 and it found 32 prog which were bad. i deleted them all and IE started working ok. While i was at it I repaired IE, deleted all cookies, temp internet files and history just in case that was messing it up. Now IE works just about fine. The problem is I have a hotmail email account and it wont let me accees this. I just get the "page cannot be diplayed" page. Of all the pages in my favourites this is the one that does not open. I also tried to download the latest patch for AVG anti virus and I get the following message
"An automatic connection to the internet could not be established. Please manually establish a connection to download yr update file (this typically can be done by launching yr internet browser)"
I have a browser open and am connected to the internet when I get this message.
I have triedt o ping web sites and this does not work. I have tried the ms web site, hotmail and this web site and it just says cannot find host and check name and try again
I have turned on and off the xp firewall and am currently using no firewall.
It is most odd. It just happens randomly. I have just tried to post somehing in the "everything else board" and it kept saying page cannot be displayed. (And so apologies if there are multiple posts)
I have looked on teh internet for other solutions but to no avail. ANy ideas?
Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard - are you connecting via a proxy server? If so, that will be the problem with Hotmail anyway. Depending on how you connect, open IE and go into Tools > Connections > Settings and uncheck "Use a Proxy Server etc" and check your LAN settings too. If not, could you please tell us whether you connect via dialup, cable or dsl and who is your ISP. Some cable software for example, forces the use of a proxy.

HI AnnMarie
thanks for the reply. I am not using a proxy server at all. I am using a 56k modem and my ISP is onetel.
I am using my dad's account to log in and he never has any problem with it. It is very odd.
Last night it just won't open any pages at all. But then sometimes it opens virtually all pages.
Thanks for any help
Richard

Hi again Richard - check the server settings. Open Outlook Express and click on Accounts on the Tools menu. Click the Mail tab and select your Hotmail account and click on Properties. Click the Server tab. The HTTP Server URL should be http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp. If your settings are fine, try changing the URL to http://oe.hotmail.com/secure/hmdata and see if that helps.
If you are still having problems, it might be a good idea if we had a look at your startups. Go here (http://www.spywareinfo.com/files/hijackthis.zip) and download and run a scan with Hijack This. Dont make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.
BTW - what OS is on this PC and what version of IE are you using?

Hi Richard - there is spyware on your PC plus a nasty little pest called TinyBar (http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/TinyBar.html).
Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall StopSign. This is known spyware masquerading as a AV/Popup Blocker. When you have rebooted, run Hijack This again and this time, select the below entries and then click on "Fix Selected".

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WebScan] ;C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\Anti-Virus\defscangui.exe -k (if still there after you uninstall Stop Sign).
Reboot afterwards and try Hotmail again. Let us know if this helps.

Hello
Thank you for the reply Anne-Marie. I have done what you said. There was no stop-sign in my add/remove programs bit so I just removed the relevnat things from Hijack This. It ddi seem to work. I can now log on to messenger and can acces my mail from that. However I still cannot get into my hotmail account by doing www.hotmail.com or going to the msn web site and trying to get it through there. I have notices that for some reason it has trouble recognising JavaScript. I dont know if that is related. I was quite surprised I still had spyware on my computer because adware did not pick it up. DO you think installing another browser may help? And if so which do you recommend?
Thanks for your help so far

Richard - are your XP critical updates current? I seem to remember there was one that addressed problems with Hotmail.
I guess you could try reinstalling Virtual Machine (http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/VM.htm).
BTW, did you try changing the settings?

Thanks for the help so far Anne-Marie. Unfortunately I cannot do what you suggest. Every time I try and download JVM is just says that it cannot find the web site. It has started being able to access more web sites. It still does not like some other though. It is really annoying. I have messed around with teh settings but to no avail. Do you think it could be hardware?

It sounds more like a software issue to me but with computers, who knows. :D Here (http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/MSJavWU_8073687b82d41db93f4c2a04af2b34d.exe) is a direct download link for MS Virtual Machine. If the link doesnt work, try copying the shortcut pasting it in your address bar and see if that helps.
There definitely is an update available for Hotmail problems. I saw it yesterday but I forgot to bookmark it. It can be downloaded from windows updates though.
It wouldnt hurt to try registering your dlls.
Close IE and go to Start > Run, and run the following commands one after the other, each line followed by 'enter':
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 comcat.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Jscript.dll
Run each line individually. After each run, you should see a short message stating the command was successful. Now reboot.
Also check your hosts file to make sure that sites are not being blocked.
