I am thinking of networking my 2 computers (both running Windows xp) to share a ADSL connection, what will I need to create a wireless network? I tried a networking wizard and the results are that I will only need a wireless access point and a USB adaptor for each PC. If i do this, does it mean the main computer will need to be switched on for the other to access the internet, or can the both access it seperatly?

Yes, the setup you are describing would require the main computer to be on for the other to access the net. The easiest thing to do is get a wireless cabable router, then just plug USB adapters into each computer and hook up the ADSL modem and away you go. That way neither one HAS to be on to surf. I have this setup at home and it works great!!
