Compaq Resario model 4712
A friend of mine purchased as used Compaq Presario model 4712. When it boots it shows the Windows 95 screen then immediately goes to dos. The only thing in the directory is command.com. He wants to load windows 2000 but cannot get to the CD Rom drive. There is no boot disk or windows 95 disks. He does have the full version of Windows 2000. Any suggestions as to how to get it to recognize the CD Rom.

Just a few added thoughts here:
If his computer supports booting from CDROM, the WIN2K install CD is bootable. He could delete the current partition, create a new partition and then format the partition via WIN2K setup. If he opts to use a WIN98 startup disk, he cannot run WIN2K Setup by invoking Setup at the command prompt.......he would have to navigate to the i386 directory on the WIN2K install CD and run WINNT.EXE He could also create the set of four floppy setup disks via the WIN2K install CD on a working computer. Instructions for accomplishing that are here. Last edited by GretaP; July 23rd, 2003 at 11:31 AM. |
