Compaq Presario 4712. Boots to the c: drive. The only thing in the directory is command.com. I'v tried a Win95 boot disk but when useing some of the DOS commands I receive the message Wrong MSDOS version must be 5.0 or higher. Booting from the disk I cannot access C: or D: drives. When booting normally it doesn't recognize the D: drive. I've been asked to load some software on this machine, but need to be able to access the CD Rom. Also cannot get into the BIOS. Any suggestions?

Try a Win 98 boot diskette from http://www.bootdisk.com
That should allow you to access the CD-ROM drive on DOS.
Also, try F10 to enter the BIOS setup.

i feel for you. I won a class action against Compaq for the same model as you have. They put them out on the market knowing there were a multitude of problems. I paid 3300.00 for my it was considered top of the line I ended up throwing it in the dumpster. Lesson hard learned.

Do you have the restore disk?
If you are able to get the cd-rom to work you can run the restore, only problem is you'll loose everything you have on you computer. Compaq's restore wipes your drive and reinstalls the original applications.
