Unhappy Internet Connection Sharing win98 client winXP host

Hi all,

I am running a home network using Realtek 8139 adapters. Host is running winXP with a USB ADSL modem. Client is win98 SE. The two are linked via an EDIMAX hub.

I'll spare you some of the details as the network is fine - no probs with file sharing etc.
I have a working Internet Gateway and the client can establish an internet connection on the host wihtout trouble.

My only problem is that IE on the client refuses to recognise the connection and keeps timing out to server not found.

I just know that the answer is going tobe something really dumb! Please put me out of my misery!

By the way I tried releasing the ip address on the client as per ICS troubleshooter in Win XP but kept getting error to do with DHC something server being unavailable?

Thanks,

Richard

try disabling all firewalls, including XP Firewall.
Then try the connection.

Did you setup ICS by using the XP Wizard?

Thanks for the reply Degsy.

There are no firewalls active on any of the connections and I also tried it with Norton Internet Security but no joy.

Yes I set it up using the Home Networking wizard on XP Home

Have you checked the DNS settings on the machine? From the client, what can you connect to, just your other PC?
