Network Cable message
I recently got another computer and decided to network my previous to it. I installed Windows Server 2003 on the new machine and have Windows XP on the other. I used a crossover cable to connect the 2 computers and have TCP/IP running for the protocol. The problem is that on both machines every 2 minutes or so the icon in the taskbar pops up and says "Network Cable Unplugged" then it goes away. I don't loose access to the resources on either computer when the message pops up. Also when I restart the machine with XP installed and try to access a Networked Drive that I mapped I always have a log on box pop up for the server and have to log on as administrator.

Hi,
Firstly, do you have another crossover cable you can use to test with ? Secondly, are you running a Windows domain on the Server 2003 box ? Thirdly, have you created a user account for your XP box on the 2003 box ? (if you want to remove the login box and haven't setup a domain create an exact replica (username and pw) of your XP account on the 2003 box) Fourthly, if you are using a domain have you created a computer account on the 2003 box ?

No I don't have an extra crossover cable to test with.
Not running a domain on the server side. Have just finished with Win 2K pro part of MCSE and don't know how to setup a domain yet. No user account is created for XP on the server. All that I did was install Win 2003 server to the computer and connect the crossover cable to both computers. They are both set to auto addressing with TCP/IP and they are both using private addresses. If I have to setup a domain on the server any help would be appreciated if you could direct me to a walkthough or some such. |

Hi,
Do you have file & print sharing enabled on both boxes ? and a share created on the Server ? If you can ping the server from the XP box and vice-versa setup a User Account on the Server that is exactly the same (same usr & pw) as the XP box. This should enable you to browse the share on the server. You don't have to have a domain on the server. I am studying MCSA atm, and have got the Win2003 ent, and adv server trials from MS. I'm using them to learn the server stuff as I don't have 2000server. Is this what you're doing to ? Re: the connection problems if these persist I strongly urge you to check the plugs on the cable, and perhaps buy another cable. Setting up a domain on Win2003 is very easy.

File and Print Sharing is enabled on both boxes. The share is on the server and it is shared out. I have no problem browsing the share the only problem I have is that when the XP Pro computer is restarted or booted up and I click the mapped drive the login box pops up and I have to log in as the server admin. The one thing that might be a problem is that when I start XP pro I go right into the OS. I'm not prompted for a user name and password it just goes to the desktop.
Yes I'm using 2003 server to use to study with as like you I don't have Win 2K Server, I only have the ent edition though. I wish that I had an extra crossover cable to test with, I just purchased this one from Radio Shack and lost the recipt :o I just got my Win 2K server book today so I'll have to look in that to setup my domain. HEHE maybe we could help each other out with Win 2K server if either of us has problems |
