A couple of preliminary questions are necessary:

1. How many PCs do you want to network together?

2. What operating systems are running on the PCs to be networked?

3. Do each of the PCs have network interface cards (NICs) installed already?

4. Will it be easy to run wire to each of the PCs and/or do any of the PCs need wireless connection?

You could purchase a Network Starter kit.

It includes everything to setup a PC to PC network, plus future upgrade paths.
