I just made my other computer into a Windows Server 2003 domain controller. When I login to the domain it takes like 3 minutes to login from the applying personal settings display. This happens with all users. I have romaing profiles set in place and I don't think that they are working. I put in the profile path of \\server1\profiles\user (where user is the name of the login) but nothing is saved in that directory and files are being created in the local computer in c:\documents and settings\user.server The workstation has Windows XP pro on it.

Those folders have "full access" for "all users"?

How about logging into the local machine as admin (the server admin) and
using "copy to" to the server folder. Once the user.dat is on the server you
may have the slow boot problem solved.

I changed them to full access for everyone. Copied the files from the local machine again to server, still have a copy on the local machine but I now think thats normal. Still have slow login problems at applying personal settings box.

XP clients are suppose to point to the DNS server which hosts the
domain. In your case it's the win2003 server. They may be pointing
to the ISP's server.

Ensure DNS server on win2k is configured to permit dynamic updates.
Ensure the win2k server points to itself as a DNS server as primary dns.

On the XP clients you should be able to do "ipconfig /all" and all output
should be your server.

Have a look through here about dns settings with the server

Have a look here for dns on an XP machine

I followed what was in the articles. It said to assign an IP address for the server so I did. Then it said to assign the DNS server address the same as the IP address which I did. I went to the XP client and configured the IP address of the DNS server to the IP of the Win 2003 server. Now the network connection doesn't work at all. When I log in it says it can't find my roaming profile and I can't access my shares.

Without knowing your setup (comps, switches, routers, what's plugged into what)
it could be a myriad of things. It sounds like your a bit unsure of what the settings
are for a domain controller. To troubleshoot everything from scratch is probably
what's needed here. I can't assist you step through step. For one I don't have
Windows 2003 server here at home.

You should run through the basics (if your not familiar with Windows server)
and if you have switches and/or routers connected I would suggest taking
them out of the loop until you have the server setup properly.

If you can get Theoran's attention on this he may have time to walk you
through this a bit further.

Look here first.

then if that fails to help then on to these:

Sorry that I didn't mention it but the 2 computers are connected with a crossover cable. I'll look at the articles that you posted and get back to you.

Looked at the articles and they didn't help any. They told how to set up a DNS server but mine is already setup, just having problems now with connecting to server because of (my guess) incorrect IP address for the DNS server.

Ok I fixed the network connection to the server and I read the articles. I am still experiencing slow logins but I looked out on the web and alot of people are as well. I guess I'll have to deal with it unless anyone else has any suggestions.

Although this points to XP machines my best guess would be that
the next Windows 2003 Server SP(*) will deal with this issue.
It's rampant for sure.
