I ran Norton SystemWorks "Single Click" scan and when I came back to check my computer, I had to do a hard restart. When the computer booted up I got the following MSDOS message:
"VMM32.VXD IS REQUIRED TO RUN WINDOWS. IF THIS FILE IS NOT IN YOUR PATH, YOU MAY NEED TO REINSTALL WINDOWS." It then takes me to a C prompt. The computer will not start in SAFE MODE. Only choices are 4,5, or 6. I do not want to have to reinstall Windows. I've gone to Microsoft's alleged support site and it basically says the same thing...I ran the instructions their support page asked me to do and since it did not find the file...Microsoft says I must reinstall Windows. Is there any way I can get this file back? Can I use one of the backup registries? If so, how do I do that in MSDOS mode. ANyone out there that can help! I sure would appreciate it...
Thanks, George

Hi ghr4new (George),
Go ahead and start up in safe mode
put your Windows98 CD in the CDROM drive then...
Start(button)
Run...
type in sfc
click on
OK(button)
select
Extract one from installation disk
type in VMM32.VXD
click on
Start(button)...
...the rest is pretty obvious, VMM32.VXD goes in the
c:\windows\system folder.

Spider - Thanks for the info. But as my message states, I cannot start up in safe mode. My computer will only run on MSDOS. So I need to figure out how to retrieve that file in MSDOS. In addition, when I start up the computer with the emergency startup disk. The computer will not run with the option 1. (start your computer with CD backup) So what can I do? Any other suggestions?

Have you tried scanreg /restore in Dos to try to access an earlier backup of your system. The file in question will not be found on the Windows CD. It is a virtual driver file that is created on installation of Windows and is unique to your computer. It cannot be copied from someone else's system. If it is corrupt or missing, the only repair is to load Windows on top of itself in order to recreate the file.

If I wanted Msvcrt.dll out of my Windows98 CD and I only had MS-DOS
then I'd use the extract command.
The line in MS-DOS would look like this...
extract /A /E /L C:\Windows\System D:\Win98\Win98_22.cab Msvcrt.dll
The only trouble with extracting in MS-DOS is you have to know
which *.cab file the actual file your looking for is in.
There is a link at Microsoft that shows cabinet contents...I just can't find
it right now. You can display a listing of cabinet files in MS-DOS by
typing this line
extract /d <cabinet>
where <cabinet> = name of the cab file on the WindowsXX CD.
Sorry I can't be more directional but I'm short of time right now.
cab link @ Microsoft to read up on (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q129605)
another link (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnwinpro00/html/w9p00a8.asp)

Ok, I just read the part where you have no CDROM access :(
Can you get into the BIOS settings (press delete key during bootup)?
