Would I have to upgrade my Ram to 512 from 256 first?
And is this a good idea? I've never had any problems with ME.
I just want a more friendly OS.

512 Ram would help, but is not necessary. XP will run fine on 256.
As for a good idea... IMO, yes. But I have a problem with ME... I hate it, I think it is the worst OS M$ ever released. But if you have no problems with it, whether or not it is a good idea is really up to you and your needs. XP is technically a lot more stable and, again IMO, a lot more user friendly. It does have a lot of useless features and services, but all of them can be disabled or modified.
