Hello to all,

My son was recently given a computer running Windows 98. I think it is actually set-up for networking. The problem is that to install a printer, it wants him to insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM disk. He doesn't have one and the printer will not install manually. Also, he has tried to install games and the same message pops up. Does this mean that he has files missing or that the system is corrupted? Not sure what is going on! If he needs to obtain the disk, how does he get one? Hope someone understands his problem and can help!

Alright what is the printer?...you may be able to find drivers online for it.

Apparently you can buy legal Windows 98 SE or ME, upgrades (from 98 First Edition) for around $70, if I understand www.pricewatch.com.

I too believe it likely you can find, download and install print driver from manufacturer.

There are also two other possibilities you can try:

1. The install files for Windows may be on the computer somewhere. They are sometimes in \Windows\Options\Cabs or you can search for the Win*.cab files. If the files are there, you can usually just point the install routine to the correct folder location.

2. If we knew the name of the file(s) that the install routine was looking for, we could probably tell whether they were standard Windows files or files supplied by the driver or software. You can try pointing the install routine to the \Windows or \Windows\System folder and see what happens.

Thanks!
I will try your suggestion, also, and see what I can find, and go from there.
