my computer is dead and its giving me a nervous breakdown -lol- i reformatted, and everything should have been fine. put in my boot disk and my windows 98 disk. it boots to the point where you can get a letter prompt.. my computers broken down into several drives so you can prompt c d e etc. however, once you get to the drive and try to install windows, you get a cdr 101 error. i realize thats a hardware error, and i obviously cant install if its not reading my cd drive.. so hence, my computer is dead. i was wondering if there was anything i could do about it.. the cd drive thing (no one ever said i was that computer literate..) has been replaced once, so this is drive number two. this would lead me to believe that theres an internal problem.. and i have 2 cd drives, so should i try to switch it to the other one thats empy? i havent the vaguest idea what to do and i know this is probably very confusing but im losing my mind.. if anyone can help id greatly appreciate it.

From the floppy did you select "Start computer with CD-ROM support"?

Hi Rayne,
I have merged the post you made in Windows 95 forum with this duplicate one that you made in the Windows 98 forum. |

hi
I understand that when you start the computer, it gives you two cdrom driveletters. and then you try to access the windows CD, and you recieve cdr 101 error well, this indicates you are trying to access it using a command which accesses the drive the windows CD is not placed in. (or, possibly, that the lens or CD is dirty) you can put the windows CD into the other drive, and give the same command (holding down F1 will reprint the command on screen...) a tip when you saw unit 1 given letter G: and unit 2 was given letter H: then try this dir G: dir H: (when it reads the CD, it shows setup.exe readme.txt win98 cdsample tools etc...) this shows you what drive it is in

yes, i selected cd rom support.
as far as using the other drive.. when i try to, it just says its not found and does the abort fail retry bit. im not totally computer illiterate :P i think i need to switch the set up for which drive is the master and which is the slave, but i dont know if that'll even help; the second drive is a tdk drive and i was told you cant load from ones that are just burner drives anyway. dunno of thats true or not - thanks for trying to help guys. im not at home right this minute or id be tweaking with it now. and thanks for whoever switched the post, i didnt mean to put it on the 95 board. im a bit frazzled at the moment oh yeah, also, no matter what drive i try, its just -not- coming up. i do know how to check directories ![]() xox ~Rayne Last edited by Rayne; August 30th, 2003 at 10:11 PM. |

hi
hmmm... you can still place it in the other drive, and then you use the other letter to access it. CDR/W drives are good to boot from, good to install from, good to read all sorts of CD, cdR and RW media (and to burn them), and because of this I hear they are so versatile they also walk the dog... ![]() my current burner is a TDK cdrw, and the second is a DVD I have no problems with this TDK, and sometimes see I have "reading problems" with the DVD...

oh
you edited again... a cdr 101 on both? the windows CD (which you have to put in a drive... ) could be very dirty, or badly scratched...
