My CDRW had a mechanical failure which required removing it BUT a red exclamation sign appeared in the middle of the "InCD" taskbar icon afterwards.

This Nero AHEAD software could not be removed using standard Windows removal procedure OR a shareware download......and it appears to be preventing installation of a replacement CD since it came bundled with the original CD installed. I'm really P-O'ed since I made a point of getting a back up CDRW that had the same software and same drive manufacturer.

I have tried to hook up new CDRW in the same manner as the original (cable select) and directly to motherboard but no luck......some warning sign always pop ups and I have to reboot.

I hate the thought of having to lug this into a shop just to install a stinkin CD and have sent a terse email to nero regarding this problem.

thanx

Try setting the CDRW as MASTER, then hook it up by itself to the secondary IDE connector on the motherboard.

See if that works (sometimes cable select will not work). If it does, the load the software, if you have another cdrom then jumper it as a slave and hook it up the the same cable as the CDRW.
