Personally, I'd say stick with XP and get to learning it. You'd love it.

As far as getting someone to put 98 on that Machine, yes it is possible. All you'll need to do is to get all the drivers for the system. May be a problem for the mother board drivers though. I've seen that in the past. Video, sound etc, shouldn't be problem.

One thing to consider though is the fact that if you take XP out and use 98, you wont be able to get any Tech support from the manufacturer of the PC. HP, Compaq etc wont help you any at all. So it may void any warrenty you get with the new PC.

I think the best thing to do would be to leave Windows XP alone like Dodge said.
It's a great operating system and you can get use to it slowly.

You can install Windows 98 on the same computer as well. It's called dual
booting. You'll have a "boot selector" (fancy name for a menu choice) when
your computer first starts and you can pick Windows 98 or Windows XP to
boot to. Use Windows 98 like you want and when you want to have a look
around Windows XP it's there to boot into when you want.

Just post a question [when you get the new machine] asking for assistance
on how to install Windows 98 for dual booting on a Windows XP machine.
