modem

Simple question for any Tech. Is a modem for a Mac the same as 1 for an IBM????????

No. The drivers would not be compatible... They are either written for Windows or Macs...

Generally speaking, hardwarewise, the modem would be capable of working with either(External types anyway), but as Dodge says you will need compatible software drivers to make it work with your type of computer and Operating System. The modem manufacturer should be able to supply you with those.

Here's a quote I found...personally never thought about it.


"Second only to the question of the difference between Mac and PC RAM, is the question of whether one can use a modem from a PC with a Mac. Again, the answer is yes (there is generally no real difference between Mac and PC models) but with some additional things to keep in mind. First, this does not apply to internal modems (though it does apply to PC Card modems). Second, you will need an appropriate Mac modem cable (it should also be a cable that supports hardware handshaking, which nearly all Mac modem cables today do). You can find this at almost any store that sells Mac products. Lastly, not all PC modems have modem scripts included with the Mac. Usually, you can get around this by choosing a similar modem script or generating a script specifically for that modem."
