I also have the problem with shut down. Using the proper shutdown procedure....(start/shut down/ ok) sometimes the computer will go black with a cursor at the top left side of the screen, and just set there doing nothing. { when it goes black, is there a flashing white cursor at the top right?} only it's on the left side. Then the only way to get it started again is to reset (with reset button) or turn the power off, wait a few seconds and turn back on. What could be causing this problem. Win Me. Thanks

before you shut down check what programs are running by using
CTRL+ALT+DEL
you can try shutting some of the programs down as one or more may be causing the problem.

Mine dose that too (thread I started is here somewhere). I don't get the cursor though (well I don't think so anyway). The screen just goes dark blue and that's it.

You can do it that way of course, but you don't know it's going to hang until it happens. Then it's too late. Besides I thought that when you told it to shut down, it closes all the programs that are running and immediately shut down. That's my opinion for what it's worth. In other words if you knew it was going to hang, you could do something different.

I too have this problem, and had a thread going a while ago on it here but got no resolve. I just deal with it now.

I followed all of Microsoft's instructions for shutdown problem troubleshooting and my problem was solved once I got the shutdown music to play. How bizarre is that? Why would the shutdown fail if it didn't have music? That was about 6 months ago, and I haven't had a "hang" (with the flashing cursor in the upper left) since.
