Unhappy Broadband Trouble

Hello,
I have powerlink from Adelphia.
This broadband connection works great except one thing.

Every few days I have to shut off the modem (30 sec) and plug it back in.
Then I can access the internet fine.

Does anyone know what I can do to overcome this??

Why is it doing it?


Are the broadband having"bumps or spikes" and the modem needs to reset.
If so, what can I do???

[I have a simular situation with Bellsouth ADSL with a Westell WireSpeed modem model A90-210030-04. I have to turn off the power to it about once every day. It is connected to a LAN of about 8 computers using Belkin switches. The modem provides dhcp however the broadband and the LAN was continually going down, not just the broadband. I installed a Belkin router with the same resultes. I then configured the router so that the router does not provide dhcp and assigned addresses to each computer. The modem still provides dhcp to the router itself. I no longer lose the lan but I still have to power off and re power the modem onc e a day or the broad band gets slower and slower until it doesn't work. After repowering the modem (actually modem and router as both are on same power strip) I get 1100 to 1300k. I'm currently back down to 560k so it's time to do it again. Any suggestions?

Anxiously awaiting a reply to this. I have the same problem through SBC (SWBell) and this is where I am at with them right now:

After testing the line I received a call indicating that my circut needed to be lowered because of noise on the line. It has been at 71% since I called and yelled at people until they opened it up over 2 years ago. It has never been a problem until about a month ago. I told them they were full of.... well ya know... and said if they reduced my circut, thus lowering my already less than desireable speed, to just cancel it. Suddenly it was no longer a problem with the circut so it must be the modem. So I wasted money on a new modem, hooked it up and called them back to let them know so the could retest the line, which they did and the results were the same. For testing purposes I told them to go ahead and reduce the circut, they did, they tested and same result so they put it back at 71%.

Apparently this entire problem, at least for me is caused by a noisy line but the idiots can't seem to track it down. They have since informed me that the problem is definately outside of my house, but where the problem actually is.... they haven't the slightest clue.

Hi peeps,

I troubleshoot these problems for a major cable company as a job. I see these "intermitent" disconnects on a daily basis. I know Adelphia uses a cable network for there broadband services, as for the other two issues, are you using DSL or Cable?

ikey, you issue may or may not be solvable without a tech coming out to check the lines at you home. What happens is that each and every brand of cable modem is designed to take a specific bandwith of signal coming down the line. If this signal is to high/low at times, you will get the intermitent issues you have been having. This is most of the time caused by signal loss on the cable line (ingress/egress)

Heres a list of things you can physically check.

1. Make sure your cable line is connected to the modem HAND TIGHT. 1/10 of a turn lose with allow for signal interference, no bull!

2. Check outside if possible to see if theres ant noticable damage to the line coming to the home. I.E. cuts/shaves/etc from gardening or anthing.

If you cant see anything physically wrong inside the house or out. Call your provided and check for Line upgrades and or Network Outages in your area. If no outages are detected, get them to send a line tech out to take signal readings.

While you wait for the tech to check the lines (Most companies dont have same day appointments ) Try bypassing all splitters and try direct connecting the modem to the cable outlet.

One last thing, be weary of Murphys Law Of Broadband. 9 out of the 10 times a tech comes out, the connection will work and signals will register fine. Try to call you ISP when the connection is down so they can that a "snapshot" of the bad connection or you being offline.

My situation involves DSL. I have cheked all lines and have a dedicated pair from the bellsouth box thru the attic to the modem.

I had trouble again yesterday.
I tried to reset the cable modem.
Still no go.

I have a wireless router hooked from the cable modem.
I looked at the router staus light.
They were flashing (problem).
I shut down the cable modem then the router.
I restarted the cable modem then the router.
It was back online.
I talked with Adelphia.
They said that it is common for the routers to "hang up" from time to time.
So, maybe this is my problem. It is my router.
The reason why I say this is because my cousin lives nearby on the same line and has been using powerlink for 2 years with no problem.

I think that it could be my router. (my end).

The question remains:

Why do I have to keep resetting every few days???

I have cable internet, it happens to me at times, however, I noticed it is usually because of a cable problem and they were working on the lines or after a power flux. Maybe this is whats happening here.

However, I would suggest checking all of your wires, make sure they are plugged in securely - including power.
