*Would greatly appreciate any help* I have a computer thats a few years old and unfortunately, have no disks that go with installed hardware/software. Also, the previous owner of the computer installed Windows ME over 98 incorrectly. I've corrected most everything I can excepy the cd-rw drive. The cd-rw will read cds, but I have had no luck in burning a cd, just multiple errors and the computer has frozen up a few times. I do know that you could burn a cd before WinME was installed. The following is all the info I can find on the drive (even took off side panels looking for a name, serial #'s, etc.): generic ide-cdrw 2x2x6 3.01, device id-66560,( Fresh Diagnose has 4V022985115083200210 listed beside "comment" in the SCSI Devices). Device manager says device is working properly. In the system summary in the installed help/support, no conflicts are listed. Tried all I know to correct problem-but I don't know much about how to fix a computer. Any comments/suggestions would be helpful, as I am almost crazy from trying to figure it out.

perhaps the lens is dirty, i don't think you can clean them with an ordinary lens cleaner, but someone else might know...

I would say there's nothing wrong with the lens because it reads O.K. You need to format your CD-RW's before you can use them, but I'm guessing you already knew that. You can download Disc Doctor (free) and it will analyze your drive and disc.
