DVD wont play on TV??

Hi not sure if Im posting this question in the right catergory?
My friend has a compaq presario 1500 p4 laptop, O/system windows XP she has a DVD rom/ re-writter in same, for some weird reason she can not run the DVD through the television via s-video cable, it appears to be some type of security measure, I guess what I am asking is how to get around same, DVD plays on screen but will not display on TV, desktop/ DVD player shows up etc, but no picture on screen it appears if she purchases power DVD this will work, Im curious it appears to be a security measure but I cant work out the rational behind same
How can she get the DVD to display on TV? Is there any other software or ideas that can rectify this?

i had the same problem cos some dvds are locked for copyright reasons
and powerdvd wouldnt let me play them
i downloaded an older video driver and this fixed it

i just put in older version drivers this seems to unlock the tv out port on powerdvdxp4, i got mine from download.com i think.i put newer drivers back in for newer games ect
