I have tried uninstalling then letting windows install the modem but this does not work. When the computer turns on its says it has found a new device- a PCI Communication Device. I'm guessing this is my modem. So it loads this as an unknown device then i can't log on to the internet because my "communication port is busy". Do i need a new modem or can i do something in windows?? Please HELP!!! Thank you :(

:) Welcome to the Forum :) !!vanessa!!
Communication port is invalid or busy
What does that mean?
It means that you may not have a solid dial tone. For example, if your voice mail system uses a beep on the line to alert you that you have a message, it will interrupt your dial tone. That makes your modem think the phone line is busy, so it won't dial out and let you get online. Before you get online, check your messages and make sure you have a clear line.
Call waiting can also kick you offline. You can usually disable call waiting by dialing *70. If that doesn't work, talk to your phone company and find out how to do it.
If neither of these seems to be the problem, you could have a bad phone line. If you don't have the problem very often, it's probably not worth having a new line installed. Of course, you can't do anything about the quality of the phone lines outside your house.
But it seems that your problem is driver related. Windows is recognizing that there is a device there, but it doesn't have the drivers it needs to run the modem. If windows does not know what kinda of device you have or how to run this device then you will not be able to use the Internet. I would reinstall the drivers for your modem or download updated drivers for your modem. If you need help finding drivers for it just reply back to your post and give us the modem name and model number.
:) I hope all work out for you. :)

The type of computer i have is a Compaq Presario model #5834. The type of modem i have is a Conexant HCF V90 56K Data Fax PCI modem. Any information for drivers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you once again.

here you go vanessa
Here are the Instructions
HOW TO USE:
1. Download the SoftPaq to a temporary, empty directory on your
hard drive. The file downloaded is a self-extracting executable
with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above.
2. Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to
install the driver.
3. After the driver has been installed, you may delete the self-extracting file
downloaded in step 1 if you wish.
AND
Here is the link
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp15501-16000/SP15540.exe
if that one doesn't work then try this one
http://web14.compaq.com/falco/sp_syn.asp?detail=yes&recid=SP15540
Hope this helps :)

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I've been out.
No. You cannot use those drivers for Win2000. Those drivers are only for Win95 & 98.
The bad thing about Presarios is that they are designed for home use and really don't support WINNT or 2000. Let me search around and seeif I can't find you the 2000 drivers for your modem. Ok :)

Vanessa,
I looked and looked, but came up short.
try this link and see if it works. If it doesn't then you might try to contact COMPAQ and see if they might be able to get you the drivers. I went to the conexant site and could even find drivers fir the modem you have :(

Vanessa, take a look at this page (and site for that matter)
http://www.808hi.com/56k/hcf0.htm
In W9x you needn't be afraid of using modem drivers from another manufacturer for your Conexant HCF modem, I'm not sure about W2k though.
