Missing system files

Recently purchased a used laptop with Windows95 installed. There are definitely some system files that are corrupt, damaged or missing. Fortunately I have the original Windows 95 CD-ROM and installation floppies. Is there a way to reinstall only the bad files? Thanks.

Hi AnnMarie - Thanks for the reply. Small problem. I do not know the names of the files I need to restore. For example, msconfig does not exist. I thought there was a way of inserting the CD-ROM and have the system search for and replace the missing system files. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi jackp - msconfig is not natively installed in Win95. You can copy the file from a Win98 system and use it though.

Nope, Win95 does not have SFC.

Great advise AnnMarie. I did not know a Win98 CD-ROM could be used on a Win95 system. It has been a long time since I delt with Win95. How do I go about extracting the file I need? When I insert the Win98 CD, the system asks me if I want to upgrade to Win98. Thanks again.

I have Win95b jackp and I have copied msconfig.exe, scanreg.exe, scanreg.ini and scanregw.exe from my Win98 OS and placed these files in the relevant directories. I just copied the files onto floppy and pasted them.

You will need to edit your registry to have scanregw.exe run at startup though.

msconfig.exe > goes in Windows\System folder
scanreg.exe > goes in Windows\Command folder
scanreg.ini > goes in Windows folder
scanregw.exe > goes in Windows folder

To have scanregw.exe run at startup, create the following file and merge it into your registry:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run]
"ScanRegistry"="C:\\WINDOWS\\scanregw.exe /autorun"

Darn - the board has put a space in the above regedit. I'll upload it for you as an attachment. Just doubleclick on it to merge it with your registry once the file is copied across.
