Hi there,
I had midi players on some of my websites, but just now I was fiddling around trying to get a Quick Time plug-in to work, then I checked out my Zone Alarm to see what I was blocking etc., but now all my on-site midi players have been replaced by empty boxes with just an emblem in the top left of them! Any quick idea what I might have done wrong??

It could be that when doing the Quick Time plug ins, Quick Time took over as the default midi file player, I'd check the settings for QT and you usual madia player!! ;)

Please remind me what I should do to ensure that WMP is my dafault player ???

Tools/Options/File Types!!! :)

Hi there!

I have already tried Tools/Options/File Types in which I ticked every single box. But it made no difference which is why I asked you, in case I had done it wrong.

Here is a web page I just took out to demonstrate the problem:
http://www33.brinkster.com/museltof/1midigone.html
If you go there, you should find a rectangular Midi Player (me too up to a few hours ago!), but now all I get is an empty rectangular box with that symbol inside (top left) which appears to show that you are trying to use something which is not on your server, and it is the same for every site I visit which attempts to do the same thing!

Help??

Well I have now done a bit of detective work on this and I am sure that neither QuickTime nor Zone Alarm are in any way responsible. (I simply disabled Zone Alarm and it made no difference), but within the last two or three days I have apparently done something which means that the <embed src... code will no longer produce a Midi Player on my computer (whether on my site or somebody elses!) Since I understand that this coding produces a Windows MP Player, does anybody know whether re-installing WMP9 (which I have) will overcome the problem??

Another interesting fact is that where I use the '<BGSOUND SRC="midiname" loop="-1">' code in the HEAD of web pages, it overcomes the problem!! But I cannot get the player to be seen!

Someone out there must have the answer to this!!

On the page you linked above, if you can right mouse click over it, and click "View Source", you'll see this without the ** added, I put them in for this to show here...

<*html>
<head>
<title>Disappearing Midi Player!!<*/title>

<body>
<br><br><br><center>
<embed src="stgeorge" autostart="true" loop="true" height="60" width="300"></embed>
<br><br><br>

<*/body>
<*/html>

I'm assuming that the midi file name is stgeorge?

There is showing...

<embed src="stgeorge"

It should be.....

<embed src="stgeorge.mid"

the midi file extension is missing off the music file!! :)

You are absolutely right - I did it quickly and accidentally left it off but that will not make any difference.
I have Midi players on my websites and they have all disappeared although the code is correct!
I will correct the code on that one within 5 minutes - but did you ACTUALLY SEE a Midi Player??

lufbra

Nope, it wouldn't show without that file extension, can you post some links to others that you have? :)

Another suggestion, you have the midi files on your computer? Have a look to see what "icon" represents them, it could be that they have a quick Time icon, or even another music program icon, they should be the WMP icon.

Hello again.

You can go back to that page now since I have corrected the code. So you should see the player and hear a great harvest hymn, but I just see this empty box!
Just test it and see if you see the player and hear the hymn.
I downloaded one of the other midi files you sent and it played fine on WMP9, but it would not work if I set it up as a visible Midi Player!
One of my "disappeared" Midi Players is here:
www.ourchurch.com/member/m/museltof/

But here is a page where I can hear the music because I set it up as background music within the HEAD of the webpage:
www.j-e-s-u-s.net/Jesus/evangelo/

Many thanks for your time and patience with me.

Robin

I do see the player in the first link, the one you corrected, so to me, it has to be that another program on your computer, is the "default" midi file player, just take a look, and see what icon represents them on your computer, then maybe go to that programs tools/options/file settings, and deselect the midi option!! :)

Just went and checked that: they all have the correct icon and, in fact, play very readily on WMP9 just as long as I don't want them to play in a visible on-line Midi Player!!

I only have WMP9 now apart from the WinMX which my daughter occasionally dowloads MP3's on - I got rid of both QuickTime and RealPlayer as I attempted to solve this problem.

I have one daft idea lurking at the back of my mind:
Remember a few days ago when I thought I had a virus but it was a false alarm? You (or somebody else) got me to check my system with Hijack This. Afterwards I was told it might be wise to delete two particular files which I did. I was careful to delete the ones I was advised to and nothing else...and yet my problems appeared to start from that day!?

Hmmmmm, there may be a setting in your WMP that is stopping this from working, or could it possibly be a firewall setting? :)

lufbra

Can you remember what files they were, that you deleted?

museltof

Regarding a firewall, yes, I run Zone Alarm, but I switched it off in order to test this point and it made no difference.

Regarding the second point, these were the two deleted files:
O16 - DPF: {5F426A93-0821-47D2-A126-5A48A874B289} (DialerWeb Class) -
O16 - DPF: {09C6CAC0-936E-40A0-BC26-707480103DC3} (shizmoo Class) -

Now I'm stuck, those files have nothing to do with your WMP, the only other suggestion I have for now, is maybe cleaning out all your temp' files and cache, then re-booting.

Just cleaned out my temp files, although I only did that yesterday, but when you say 'clear cache' you will have to remind me about that because I thought clearing out the temp files was the same thing.

Are we not getting close to the point where it might be easier to reinstall WMP9? I think there is some obscure file somewhere without which you never get to see the midi player and I think I have accidentally deleted it somehow over the last few days.
If I go for that option, should I uninstal WMP first? Or will the new one just replace it??

try a repair of IE.
goto Add/Remove programs>
select to remove IE and you should get a box asking if you want to Repair

The 1st link you posted is a QUICK TIME Player with the following HTML code:

<html>
<head>
<title>Disappearing Midi Player!!</title>
</head>
<body>
<br><br><br><center>
<embed src="stgeorge.mid" autostart="true" loop="true" height="60" width="300"></embed>
<br><br><br>

</body>
</html>

So quicktime has taken over your computer. Why not uninstall Quicktime???

Not true.
The code posted will play a MIDI file (.mid)
MIDI files can be played with many players.
I use Windows Media Player 6.4

The 1st link you posted is a QUICK TIME Player with the following HTML code:

Murf, I'm guessing you have QT installed and configured to play MIDI files

Why not uninstall Quicktime?

Earlier posts indicate that QT has be uninstalled

JUST TO SAY THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!!

I finally lost patience and simply re-installed WMP9 and it has solved all my problems!

It seems as though either a file had become corrupted or I had inadvertently deleted a vital file. I have now also learned of somebody else that this happened to.
ONCE AGAIN, THANKS!
