Hi guys,

again I need your help.....This time it concerns myself, at work.

Here's the situation:
Laptop computer - OS = MS Win 98 (first edition).
This morning (Danish local time) I started the computer as usual, logged onto the network. Got a message that I needed to update my antivirus (Norton AntiVirus 2001) - did this through LiveUpdate - everything went as normal. The update was both for NAV 2001 and the virus definitions - because of the first I had to restart the computer.
Did so - went fine. Logged onto network again.
Clicked to start my e-mail-program, MS Outlook 97 - it started to load, but stopped while the splash screen still was on... :(
Took a CTRL-ALT-DEL - it told me that Tapisrv did not answer. I ended the job - and then the screen froze - then it went black.
I tried CTRL-ALT-DEL again - got the message that "the system was occupied" - tried CTRL-ALT-DEL again - nothing, absolutely nothing, happened. Had to shut down the hard way.

I tried four times - still had trouble with Tapisrv. Called our IT-unit....

We have checked the modem (Xircom Ethernet+Modem (CEM 33.6)) - it works fine - I can get onto the Internet and several other things.
We have tried to reinstall Windows 98 - didn't help.

Any suggestions....?????

Kind regards,
Lotte G., Denmark

Lotte, I would post the problem at the Symantec (Norton) website. They are pretty good at responding. You should get an answer within hours. The only thing I could suggest would to reinstall DUN, but it could be one of the settings instead.

Being as it seemed to happen in conjunction with a Norton Update, then this is the place to go:

www.symantec.com/techsupp/consumer.html (http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/consumer.html)

The file in question is part of your DUN setup, however the problem could be in Norton not allowing the file to load.

I like your signature. Very good advice.

Hey Lotte, nice to see ya here again. You could try this.

Boot to true DOS. Hit the F8 key(Or CTRL if F8 doesn't work) at the first sign of bootup. When the menu appears it should say Normal, Safe, etc. CHoose Command Prompt Only. At the C:\> type scanreg /restore Leave a space between the G and / When the list comes up choose a date prior to this problem occuring. After all is done, Reboot the system.

Give this a try. I am guessing that the Update may have corrupted your registry.

BTW, sorry it took so long to get a suggestion on this.....

Hello Rusty and Dodge,

thanks for your advices. I'll try restoring the Registry, after I've seen what Symantec has to say about the problem.

I'll post back with results.

Kind regards,

Hi Rusty and Dodge,

here's the results of your suggestions.

First I tried to access the Symantec Techsupport, both by the link that Rusty suggested and through my own links in Favorites - but both times Internet Explorer halted....
Did Ctrl-Alt-Del, found out that IE didn't answer, ended the job - and got a black screen. Did Ctrl-Alt-Del again, got the message that a serious exception had occurred....
Tried to press random key - only got the black screen again, but this time with my mouse cursor on it. Couldn't get the cursor to move - did Ctrl-Alt-Del again and got the message that the system was occupied and waiting for the "End job" window to appear....
Tried Ctrl-Alt-Del again to no avail. Nothing happened. Had to shut down the hard way - again.... :(

Then I followed the suggestion that Dodge gave - to restore the registration database.
And after the reboot I could get Outlook 97 to load perfectly! :)

So, it must have been the update of NAV 2001 that did something to my registration database.....

Now I've only got one problem left....:
During the reboot after restoring the database, I got a message screen from NAV Auto-Protect telling me that it was "unable to initialize the virus scanning engine database files", with only one option - to say "OK". Then Windows loaded perfectly.
BUT - the NAV 2001 icon in my systemtray shows that NAV Auto-Protect is disabled.....When I enter NAV 2001 the list tells me that it is enabled.....
Don't understand this....But I'll try to ask Symantec - if I can access their site now.... ;)

Thanks for your help so far! :D
I'll post back to tell result from Symantec, if I can get through to them.....

Kind regards,

Hi crazy paddle

office 97 had many bugs
there are two huge downloads with service packs available
sr1off97.exe
and
sr2bof97.exe

they may recently have been removed for download? I dunno..

the servicepacks get rid of a couple hundred bugs in office
(I heard 430 or thereabouts in sr1, and 131 in sr2)
the only problem (ain't it always something with M$ ?)
once you installed outlook 98
or
once you (re-)installed Internet explorer 5.x update after the installation of office97, the office update process wont work no more

here's how I set up
win98se

office 97 full custom istall
no reboot
sr1 (still no reboot required)
sr2 (needs number so you either write it down during off 97 setup, or look in help and write it down. word must be closed. also close findfast or wait until it finished...)

after sr2 finished
reboot

then I install outlook 98
reboot
then I install the archive patch for outlook 98
and then I install ie5.5

and after all programs are set up, I install AV, and first do a full scan, and then do the update

I very rarely see blue screens...
office 97 is good enough
but I much prefer OL98

I still have couple of cdroms with international english versions of OL98 on it
(no longer available for download, but OL98 was on many a freebie cdrom years ago, and I got a few of those that way))

now, If I put that OL98 disk on a duck, it could paddle all the way to denmark?

now, If I put that OL98 disk on a duck, it could paddle all the way to denmark?

Jaak, you're great! :D But for now, I'll settle with OL 97 - if I can get it to work.... :(

Good friends, I still have trouble....

I haven't got an answer from Symantec yet. And last night (Danish time) my computer was shut down automatically by our system, when the backup was taken....
That means that when I started the computer this morning, NAV loaded - and I was back where I were on Friday morning....
I thought: Allright, then I'll do another System Restore to the settings from Thursday. And so I tried to - BUT it failed. For some reason, System Restore couldn't install the settings from Thursday....

Now I've tried the suggestions from Symantec's Knowledge Base (you can read it here: Error: "NAV Auto-Protect unable to initialize the virus scanning engine database files" when starting the computer after running System Restore (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/pfdocs/2000121311031906)). I've even uninstalled and reinstalled NAV 2001. Just after that everything worked. - But of course I had to run their LiveUpdate to get the newest virus definitions.....
And after that update, I'm having trouble again.....

What can I do now?
If I can't restore the system till the date before the problems started, what then?

Oh, I do hope that some of you have some suggestions.......

Kind regards,
Lotte G., Denmark

My latest update on this issue:

I uninstalled NAV 2001 once more, then updated Win 98 as much as I could (through MS update pages).
Now I've reinstalled NAV 2001 from the installation disk. Everything works perfectly.....only I'm not updated on my virus protection.

This time, when I run LiveUpdate, I'll only download updates for the virus definitions - NOT updates for NAV 2001......and then let's see how things go.....

I've written to Symantec once more - and I'm still hoping that they will come up with an answer of some kind....!

Still - if anybody has any suggestions, please come forward!

Jaak:
office 97 had many bugs
there are two huge downloads with service packs available sr1off97.exe and sr2bof97.exe
I've already installed these two service packs.....They're still available at MS, though it's not too easy to find them. (Tried today.)

The only thing I can make out of my problems is that it's not Office or Outlook 97 that causes the problems - it's NAV 2001, or rather the latest update for that program. Until I downloaded that, I didn't have any trouble at all.....

UPDATE:
As you can read in this tread (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=000559), it WAS Norton AntiVirus that caused the trouble.
