Some time ago my computer was attacked by a bad virus and most of my applications were either removed or corrupted. One of those removed applications was Microsoft Works 2000. When I select the program icon (Start>Programs) I get a dialog thta informs me that the app is unavailable. I next open the Add/Remove Programs (in the Control Panel) and Me attempts to install the program but fails. A dialog appears that tells me that the wks2000.MSi file is missing. I have my Application Recovery disk (#3) in my CD-ROM tray but nothing happens- Works does not install.
I have read the docs in Microsoft.com and nothing has helped. I do not know the type of virus that infected my system. I do remember that it did act much like a Trojan bug. How do I get Works 2000 up and running? Thanks for your help! |

You mentioned disc 3, which means you have an HP? If so, is Works even listed on that third disc? I have a separate Works and Money disc (bought my machine in July 2001). I always uninstall Money, and if memory serves there's an option to repair Works/Money when you choose to uninstall in the Add/Remove programs box. Might be worth a look. Personally, when things get corrupted I just uninstall and reinstall whatever the program is.

HP Pavilion. Works was pre-installed. All I got with the computer was a System Recovery (three-disks) and nothing else! The third disc is the Application Recovery disk. Microsoft Works and Money are not listed for installation.
I went to the Add/Remove panel and selected both the Works and then the Money icons and followed the directions. After a few seconds of processing, I got a dialog which demanded the Works or Money disk. I had the disk three in the HD and it didn't accept it. I placed each disk in the CD-ROM and I got the same deal. I even clicked the Browse option and directed the installer to the disk; no dice. I purchase the computer around the same time you did (2001). The Works app must be in one of the disks previded me by HP. This simple problem should not be so difficult to solve. What are my options now? _ |

Works is on one of the two main recovery discs, (assuming your software build is the same as mine, or close), but I couldn't tell you how to extract it by itself.
If it's not listed on disc 3, Works isn't recoverable without a reinstall. (Well, not without some know-how, anyway). The Works disc I got was in a little plastic sleeve, no jewelcase. Reckon you might have overlooked it and misplaced it? Post your model number. HP's site will list what came in the box. Here's mine, and what you can expect to see: http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport...Tfile=bph06430 Last edited by JoJo Gunn; September 22nd, 2003 at 09:12 PM. |

I purchased my HP prior the the Compaq take-over. I will try your suggestion regardless 30111987. I hope it works.
JoJo Gunn: It may be possible that I did got an additional disk with the computer. I will try to find it. If I am unable to locate it, what are my opitions then? Last edited by Mongoose; September 22nd, 2003 at 09:25 PM. |

You could have gotten a replacement disc while the computer was in warranty. But you'll have to buy one now, if it's still offered. The recovery set will likely be readily available, but the Works disc might not be.
As far as options, if you "have" to have Works, you can do a recovery, NOT a format and recover, though. It'll put your machine back to the way it came out of the box, and yet leave your stuff in My Documents alone. I suspect you got a disc in the carton, but can't be sure until you post your model number and we can check the specs out. You can find your model number this way: Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Hp Pavilion Support ID. EDIT: I went looking around the HP parts site and couldn't find the Works CD listed. After a couple of years you'd likely be better off haunting software suppliers or E-Bay or something. (The 3 recovery discs are 25 bucks, by the way). I do not have the Works disc. I will likely do a recovery as suggested. Thanks all!
