image copyright

Hello

Is it allowed to copy images of other website and then dispaly them on your own. The reason I ask is that I think wrt newspapers it is images that are copyrighted but the text is not. This is why you can have 5 papers all with world exclusives. The first edition of all bar one doesnt have this exclusive then it is possible to just "copy" the text.
I thikn this is correct but I am no lawyer so am not 100% What are the rules wrt web sites?

Thanks
Richard

All original artwork on websites belongs to the individual who created it or to the person who purchased the rights to them. You cannot go to any website and steal whatever you want. And yes it is stealing. If you want to use an image you found on a website, you need to contact the sites owner and asked permission. Also just because the 30 bucks was not paid to legally copyright something does not mean it does not belong to the individual who created it.

These news papers that carry similar stories subscribe to a service that provides them with the news story. So really the 'wire service' is 'renting' them a license to use the 'text'.

Copyright over images and code is very hard to enforce due to IMO insufficient laws.

Another issue with copyright is that copyright laws only exist in some countries. Making enforcing copyright law a huge hassle

Also in UK law anything you produce which is unique and published is copyrighted regardless of a copyright line on the bottom of a page.

To truely enforce copyright law you're better of registering a trademark. Now, this is hard, and expensive. It makes prosecuting offenders a lot easier, and quicker. However, it is subject to the same problem with regards to which countries have a copyright law anyway.

Thanks for the replies. The reason I ask is that I have seen some really cool optical illusion images and I wanted to put them on my web stie. I have also developed a few myself which would compliment them. I might email the relevant sites so seek permision

There are reciprocal treaties etc between countries so it is enforcable, just in a different way
