re installations on W98 that go wrong

Today my son installed a game on my computer. For some reason the installation went wrong and would not play the game and came up with an error message, several actually. I tried to uninstall the game but every time I tried to do this the computer screen froze. I tried to install on top but it wouldn't do that either.
I went to the registry and deleted all keys to that had a reference to the game (Lord of the Rings).
The game is now not in the Add/Remove programmes properties in the controll Panel. However when I go to reinstall the game the installation disk still does not give me the option to reinstall the game (the install game option is greyed out).
This would suggest to me that there are still files on the computer associated with the game. If that is the case, how do I get rid of them so I can reinstall the game?

I am not familar with the game but with some software, it is better to uninstall using its own uninstall selection i(if available) instead of windows uninstall feature. Which one did you try?

Things to try

go to program files directory and see if a directory was created for the software. It may be under the manufacturers name or something close to the title. Delete the whole directory. Before deleteing the directory, besure it is the right one :-) Check the date the directory was created. It should be the day and time you originally installed the software.

you might also need to go to the manufacturers website and see if they have any instructions.

if possible, try reinstalling windows without deleting the current installation(overwrite) or format the disk and re-install.

After making sure all files and folders in the directory tree are gone as renegade600 said, if you want to try to reinstall the game, make sure your anti-virus program is disabled during the installation.

The problems with the game you described are often due to an AV program running during the installation...Norton AV in particular, although I've experienced similar problems with McAfee.
